Carmen and Lloyd Beaumont were guests of honour at a potluck lunch Sept. 16 at the Do Drop In. The couple, who have been active community members, are moving to Saskatoon in October.

The cement base and plumbing have been installed for new showers and bathrooms, in the Meota Regional Park. This will be a welcome addition for campers and make the area more appealing than ever. The concession appears to be closed for the season but there are a few trailers still around. A resident was seen fishing off the end of a dock last week - enjoying the quiet sunny day, perfect for that type of activity. That's what retirement is all about. The walls and rafters are up at the new fire hall in Meota, so you can see what a great building we will have. It will be closed in before winter, so work can continue inside.

Dec. 13, 2014, when written 12/13/14, will be the last sequential calendar date in this century. Dec. 13 is a Saturday, a perfect day for a perfect wedding - many hotels and tourist ads are offering special packages to special places.

Travelling in the Edam area one cannot help but notice the many trailers in the trailer park. I found out they are being occupied by oil field workers who cannot find other accommodation.

The Sunset Escape Bed and Breakfast at the Spiritwood Golf Course is listed among the "top 10" in the province by AAA.

My niece had a good hint about having fresh cookies on hand. When she mixes up a batch, she cooks a couple dozen and leaves the rest of the batch in the fridge, ready to be cooked any time. Force of habit, when I did my last batch and planned to try, I had them all cooked before I remembered.

My two great-granddaughters in Okotoks, Alta. had nine inches cut off their hair before school started. It was sent to Pantene Beautiful Lengths in Ontario where it will be made into wigs for people with medical needs. They had been planning to do it for many years. They are six and eight years old.

Credit for the Terry Fox Run picture should have gone to Randy Chaykowski of North Battleford. Thanks so much for sharing it for our report.

Duplicate bridge played Tuesday evening found the top scoring couple to be David Sharpe and Linda Ard with second highest score Margaret Dyck and Ross Morton. This seems to be a popular game in this area and others.

A contractor from Borden, Man. has been fined $12,600 for unauthorized alteration of the shoreline of the Chitek River, near Meadow Lake. He altered the bed, bank and boundary of the river without a valid permit. A number of old creosoted railway bridge ties had been stockpiled and there was evidence of creosote leaching into the river, which runs into the Meadow river which is a source of drinking water for Meadow Lake. Any time you witness natural shorelines of lakes or rivers being altered, you do wonder how they got permission, or did they?

What was your take on the TV news when they said "a B.C. lady from Red Deer," sounded a bit off to me.

As I left the community hall after the monthly luncheon, I met a fellow working at the back of the building, so I asked what he was doing. He was installing the air conditioning system for the whole building. Now there'll be no excuse for leaving doors open for ventilation when it's too warm inside. The flies and mosquitoes won't find it so easy to spoil an event, now.

The Sept. 19 luncheon was one of the biggest ever, and the committee is pleased to know they have the support of the community in their efforts of maintaining and improving the complex. They extend their appreciation with a big thank you! The crowd also would like to say "thanks" for the great meal and many desserts and nice social time with friends and neighbours.

On the afternoon of Sept. 19, many folks drove to the farm home of Arlene Walker to spend the afternoon playing Norwegian Whist followed by a lovely potluck supper. High score in whist was Vern Iverson, tied for second were Murray McCrimmon and Jack Stewart, with Lorna Pearson in third place. We all enjoyed the big double rainbow we were favoured with around 6 p.m. There were four tables in play, so you got to visit with most folks.

The library has many books printed in large print for those with reading problems. They have the largest collection of local history books in the province. They are missing some nearby ones though - Spiritwood, Belbutte and Idylwild - if anyone should find an extra one at yard sales or wherever. They likely need a Leoville one, also.

Gordon, in northern British Columbia heard the news report that the CN Rail had been sued and fined for not moving grain to the Prince Rupert Port quickly enough. The very next day as he drove into Telkwa, he had to wait while a 175 car train passed in front of him, all grain cars. They got the message after going to court where they were fined $100,000.

Irene Theroux from St. Paul, Alta. has spent a week visiting her cousin Beulah Corbiel, in Meota. There were lots of card games all week. Irene's son came for her Sunday.

It's good to find Ben Byl back in action, following surgery about a month ago. Hope your recovery continues well, we've been missing you!

Driving back to Meota from Arlene Walker's on Friday evening, we watched several thunderstorms in the distance. The one west of here found my granddaughter Lori Pearson driving in sheets of rain in the Marshall area. Some of Highway 16 has been repaved and the line isn't painted yet so it was treacherous driving. During a similar storm in Camrose, Alta. the same night, a family reports a streak of lightning passed through their house, from the front door to the back door- not doing any damage but the clap of thunder sent them into a frenzy.

Did you see the program featuring Sarah Hughes, Canada's Olympic champion, giving advice on sports drinks and energy bars? There are eight teaspoons of sugar in every bottle of pop, as well as other additives. Clara went along with the advertised benefit of bars and drinks until she nearly ruined her health and started research into the contents of these foods. She has changed her menus to real food, cooked at home. This sugar is worst for children and young adults and leads to obesity. Athletes have to know what they're eating to give them the energy they need.

Contract Bridge was played at the Do Drop In on Monday evening with top score going to Warren Iverson and Robert Iverson coming second.

Following the regular practice of the Meota Hobby Band Sept. 16 at the Do Drop In, a potluck dinner was enjoyed by everyone. Honoured were Carmen and Lloyd Beaumont in view of their contribution to our community, in the years they have lived here. They were presented with a mug decorated with musical symbols and with a saxophone handle, full of money. Lloyd is an original member of the Hobby Band since 2005 and has been band leader ever since. Heplays the saxophone. Carmen has been the organizer of the Strides Health program in Meota, so they will both be missed very much. They plan to continue being active when they get moved to Saskatoon in mid-October and we wish them well in their future endeavours.
