HUMBOLDT — To some, an empty wall is just that: empty. To Derek Pasitney and Mitch Babin, it is their canvas.
The spray-painting duo spent four full days turning the empty wall on the side of the Weigers building into a ‘Welcome to Humboldt’ mural.
And they didn’t need to look far for inspiration for the 123X13 ft. empty wall. Each letter features a tribute to one of Saskatchewan’s seasons. Pasitney said the mural together represents two years consecutively in Saskatchewan, starting with a winter ‘H’ and ending with an autumn ‘T’.
Two-hundred and fifty cans were ordered for the 1,599 square foot mural with a full colour palette of around 60 colours at their disposal.
After a month of planning, including a lot of nights sketching and planning, the piece was finally finished on Aug. 19.
Pasitney and Babin hope everyone can take a moment from their day and enjoy the mural, maybe it will even evoke some old memories.
“I want that mural to remind people of the beauty around us. We take so much of it for granted; the changing skies and open prairies and the variety of vibrant changing colors… maybe it'll make someone stop and appreciate the next sunset,” said the pair in a joint statement.
Experience played a big role in completing the project with Pasitney and Babin having nearly 30 years of painting experience combined between them. The mural is the largest piece they’ve ever worked on.
Given the location of the mural, this beautiful piece of Saskatchewan will last for a long time, Babin said.
