New manager hired by Borden Housing Authority

Melissa Braun of Borden has been hired as the new Borden Housing Authority manager, replacing Ivan Youchezin who resigned last month. Braun will be in charge of seven individual units and Idylwyld Court with six units.

The Borden Housing Authority board consists of chairperson Jean Hryniuk, Rhonda Funk, vice- chair Ken Tanchak, Mel Brooke and Heather Schroeder.

Students coming back to school welcomed a few new faces, with kindergarten/Grade 1 teacher Mandy Weyland on staff until Jackie Corbett returns from maternity leave in January. The Grade 2, 3 and 4 teacher Katie Hesje. A new administrative assistant is Angelena Lukan from Langham and interns are Miss Picard in the Grade 5/6 room and Miss Gabora, Mr. Janzen with Mr. Luiten and Mrs. Kaufman in Grade 7/8 and the high school.

Borden School has now become peanut/nut-free so there are a few rules parents and students need to adhere to.

Kindergarten orientation was Sept. 3 and the students began classes Sept. 4.

In sports there will be junior and senior girls’ volleyball teams coached by Nicole Kaufmann and a senior boys’ team coached by Mitch Luiten and Chris Anderson. The senior girls play Sept. 12 in the Colonsay tournament, then host Dalmeny Sept. 23. The junior girls host Dalmeny Sept. 16 and play in a Warman tournament Sept. 18-19. The boys’ senior team plays at Rosthern Junior College Sept. 18-19 and in Perdue Oct. 3.

New this year to the school is a noon hour book club, where students read and discuss books they have been reading.

The school still collects Campbell’s soup labels and to date have collected 19,124 points to purchase supplies, so please keep saving them.

Hot lunches will be held Sept. 17 and 30. There is no school Sept. 25.

The school community council works with parents and community members to develop shared responsibilities for the learning process and well-being of all children and youth and to encourage and facilitate parent, community and youth engagement in school planning and improvement. On the Borden SCC are chair Sheri Sutherland, Gwen Dyck, Kim Worona, Laura Reiter, Danielle Grasby, principal Dean Broughton and board member Ken Crush. They meet the last Wednesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. at the school.

The SCC will be looking for volunteers to bake, donate or help out with the breakfast program this upcoming year. Just remember the peanut/nut-free policy for any baking coming into the school.

The Borden Dance Club held their registration Sept. 3. A presentation was made from Affinity Credit Union from their community development fund. Diane Tracksell and Lynette Schmidt presented a cheque for $500 to the dance club.

Affinity Credit Union’s 50/50 toonie draw held Aug. 31 had Diane Tracksell of Borden winning $72. The proceeds from this draw are going for a new commercial oven at the community centre.

The Borden Community Centre committee are holding their annual community garage sale in the hall Oct. 16 from 3 – 8 p.m. and Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. with proceeds going to the new oven. Items may be brought in Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., but no TVs, wall units, clothing or books other than children’s or current fiction. Items must be clean and gently used.

Borden Threshing Day is coming up Sept. 26, two miles north of Borden cemetery. Gates and cook car open at 10 a.m. The parade is at noon with the horse-drawn events and threshing after the parade. The museum opens at 3 p.m. James Steele on fiddle and his sister on keyboard will be playing at the site and in the seniors’ room. Supper is 5 – 7 p.m. with tickets on sale at 4 p.m. in the seniors’ room.

Congratulations to Julia Unruh and Michael Green of Australia, who were married Sept. 5 in an outdoor wedding at the Borden area farm home of Julia’s parents, Earl and Laurie Unruh. Julia has been working in Australia for the past few years, and she and Michael returned to Queensland, Australia Sept. 7.
