Neilburg High School Awards Day held

Principal Worman presented the Spirit of Youth Award to Shannon Putnam.

Shannon Putnam was the winner of the Spirit of Youth Award and was also the Outstanding Student of the Year at Neilburg Composite School for 2012-13.

Principal Worman presented the Spirit of Youth Award to Shannon Putnam. This is given to a Division IV student who shows leadership ability, a co-operative attitude, good academic standing and participates socially, academically and athletically in school and community activities. Students nominate the winners and the final result is determined by staff consensus.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow presented the drama awards. Winning the "Oscar" for best actor was Eli Jacquest. Shannon Putnam was the best actress. There was a tie for the best supporting actor with both Chad Graham and Dustin Hafner sharing the accolade. Ashlee Goodfellow was the best supporting actress. School of Nerds was the best play.

Mr. Volk presented the Dallas Ball Memorial Award to Austin Gibler. This is given to a student who shows dedication to sports as far as participation and team spirit is concerned. It is not necessarily given to the best athlete.

Zachery Herle won the Most Valuable Player for junior volleyball. He was presented with his award by Mr. Worman. His female counterpart, as Most Valuable Player for junior volleyball, was Kailee McGarry, who received her prize from Mr. Gieni.

In senior volleyball, the boys' Most Valuable Player was Quinton Ryan who was presented with his award by Mr. Volk. Mr. Gieni, in turn, presented Avery Moir with the prize for the Most Valuable Female Player in senior volleyball.

Mr. Gieni also presented the basketball award for junior girls to Kailee McGarry and Chloe Marshall. Mrs. Wells presented the Doug Park Track Award to Quinton Ryan for his commitment and dedication to track and field.

The junior Athletes of the Year were presented with their trophy by Mr. Worman. Based on the decision of the various coaches, Ethan Moir and Kailee McGarry took this honour.

The Elsie Edwards Memorial Award for the Senior Athletes of the Year was presented by Mr. Gieni to Quinton Ryan and Taryn Timmermans.

Dustin Hafner was the recipient of the deportment award which goes to a student who possesses an ability to get along with teachers and peers and has a good personality and attitude. Marks are not considered.

Mrs. Deb-Kerr Goodfellow made several presentations on behalf of the Neilburg branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Laura Hegel was delighted to receive a medal for second place at the provincial level for her senior black and white poster. She also received $80 for having her artwork move up the competition from local to zone and then through districts to provincial competition. Chad Graham was recognized for his senior colour poster which won second at the zone level. Breanna Conlon's intermediate poem also won second at zones. Kailee McGarry won third for her intermediate poster at zone level.

McKayla Lillico was presented with the J. S. Palmer Scholarship of $200 by Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow.

Kerr-Goodfellow also called Eli Jacquest and Dustin Hafner to the podium. They were both recipients of Allan Craig scholarships. There are six of these awards presented within the Northwest School Division. In order to qualify, students must write an essay which is then judged. There were 16 essays in the competition this year and Eli Jacquest came in second and Dustin Hafner placed fifth to obtain one of the purses of money. Dustin Hafner also won the ACCESS Scholarship for $200, which was presented by Principal Worman.

Outgoing SRC president, Shannon Putnam, introduced the Student Representative Council for 2013-14. Kasey Schmidt will be leading the group as president. Taryn Timmermans is the incoming vice-president with Laura Hegel as secretary. The intramural co-ordinator will be Bailey Zweifel. The sports director is Connor Urlacher with Caleb Biensch as the assistant sports director. Social club directors are Kaibre Watson and Danielle Scott. The media co-ordinator will be Courtney Cammidge and Brandon Morgan is the fundraising co-ordinator.

In the house intramural leagues, the Tigers placed first and the Moose came in second place. The first place students on each team were: Austin Gibler, Moose; Taryn Timmermans, Wolf Pack; Kasey Schmidt, Roosters, and Christine Madlang-Awa, Tigers).

The final award of the afternoon was the Outstanding Student of the Year. This was presented by Principal Worman to Shannon Putnam. The prize is chosen by the staff for the student's contributions to all activities, both curricular and extra-curricular.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow concluded the Awards Day by thanking the Neilburg Legion for their continued support of the school. She also thanked the Marsden and Neilburg branches of the Synergy Credit Union for purchasing new microphones for the sound system, thus greatly improving the sound quality of events held in the gym. She also expressed appreciation for each of the award sponsors.

Finally, Kerr-Goodfellow made mention of the class of 1967 and their recent reunion. They made a monetary donation to the school, after the reunion, in memory of their classmate Bryan Foster, which has enabled the purchase of two mini iPads for use by special needs students.
