Neilburg High School Awards Day held

Awards were presented to students in Grades 7 through 12 at Neilburg Composite School during the annual afternoon program to recognize achievements over the 2012-13 academic year.

Awards were presented to students in Grades 7 through 12 at Neilburg Composite School during the annual afternoon program to recognize achievements over the 2012-13 academic year. Parents, grandparents, friends and community members gathered in the gym June 19.

The afternoon began with Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow offering a warm welcome to all who were present. The audience was led in the singing of O Canada by Laura Hegel and Anri Steenkamp.

The first items to be handed out were the proficiency awards. These are presented to the student in each grade with the highest average in English, social studies, science, math and the next two best marks for a total of six subjects.

The Grade 7 and 8 awards were presented by Mr. Walso on behalf of the Lloydminster and District Co-op Association. The Grade 7 winner was Wyatt Marshall and Colby Urlacher took home the keeper plaque for Grade 8. Tracy Zweiffel presented the Grade 9 plaque, on behalf of sponsor, Viterra, to Mariah Nattress. Councillor Susanne McDuff presented the Grade 10 prize, on behalf of the Village of Neilburg, to Traydon Lane.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow presented the Grade 11 and 12 awards on behalf of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Cut Knife detachment as none of the constables were able to attend. Kasey Schmidt was the Grade 11 winner and Shannon Putnum received the Grade 12 honours.

Honour roll certificates were then presented to well-deserving students. To achieve honours status, a pupil must have an average between 80 to 89 per cent in six subjects. High honours is 90 per cent or over.

Mr. Walso presented the Grade 7 honour certificates to Jordan Czerniak, Lindsay Gibbons, Craig Hewko, Allie Ostrom, Jacob Peters and Jarrod Ryan. High honours went to Wyatt Marshall and Tyra McIntosh. Mr. Walso also presented the Grade 8 honour certificates to Caleb Biensch, Bryce Conlon, Erin Houlton, Kailey Kurtz, Jenna McGarry and Ethan Moir. Receiving high honours were Jordan McGarry and Colby Urlacher.

Mr. Gieni presented the honour certificates for Grade 9 to Breanna Conlon, Madison Fouhse, Kylie Goodfellow, Lauren Loy, Chloe Marshall, Taylor Morgan and Dakota Prystupa. High honours were attained by Taryn Black, Kailee McGarry, Mariah Nattress, Shaelyn Putnam and Paige Watson.

Hanna Herle, Abigail Lambert, Traydon Lane, Christine Madlang-Awa, Jenelle Murphy, Taryn Timmermans and Connor Urlacher received honours in Grade 10. Brandon Morgan, Quinton Ryan, Danielle Scott, Kaibre Watson and Laura Hegel were honour students in Grade 11. High honours went to Jonah Biensch, Kasey Schmidt and Coleman Tyler.

Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow handed out the Grade 12 honour certificates to Marissa Brockhoff, Chad Graham and McKayla Lillico. Receiving high honours were Dustin Hafner, Ashlee Goodfellow, Eli Jacquest and Shannon Putnam.

Next on the agenda were the achievement awards for each subject area.

Mrs. Wells presented the science/math awards (three classes in the science or math area) to Wyatt Marshall, Grade 7; Colby Urlacher, Grade 8; Paige Watson, Grade 9; Traydon Lane, Grade 10, and Kasey Schmidt, Grade 11.

The humanities awards for highest overall average in English and social studies were presented by Mrs. Deb Kerr-Goodfellow to: Wyatt Marshall, Grade 7; Jordan McGarry, Grade 8; Mariah Nattress, Grade 9; Traydon Lane, Grade 10; Kasey Schmidt, Grade 11, and Shannon Putnam, Grade 12.

Mr. Gieni presented the applied arts awards, for the highest overall average in any two of home economics, food studies, industrial arts, computers, information processing, accounting or robotics, to Tyra McIntosh, Grade 7; Erin Houlton, Grade 8; Paige Watson, Grade 9; Taryn Timmermans, Grade 10; and Kody Smith, Grade 11. There was no award for Grade 12.

The fine arts awards, for the highest overall average in any two of music, drama and visual arts, were also presented by Mr. Gieni. The winners were: Wyatt Marshall, Grade 7; Ethan Moir, Grade 8; Paige Watson, Grade 9; Christine Madlang-Awa, Grade 10; Laura Hegel, Grade 11, and Eli Jacquest, Grade 12.

Principal Worman presented the Doolittle Award for the most improved student, which can be academic, attitudinal changes, etc., to Bailey Zweifel.

Susanne McDuff, the Neilburg branch manager of the Synergy Credit Union made the presentation of the credit union award for the highest average in foundations 30, calculus 30, chemistry 30, biology 30 and physics 30 to Eli Jacquest.
