International Baccalaureate (IB) students at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School celebrated their successes, June 12.
Allison Hawryliw, IB co-ordinator, was MC for the evening.
Entertainment throughout the celebration included Ainslie Millie who entertained on the piano as people entered the cafeteria, Jean Van Der Merwe who sang Steal Away to Heaven and Shea O'Bertos, a 2011 diploma recipient, and Taegan O'Bertos who sang Je te promets.
This year's guest speaker was Emily Hall, an IB diploma recipient in 2005. Emily is currently teaching kindergarten at McKitrick Community School. Janice Staff, the commercial cooking teacher and her Grade 11 and 12 students provided the delicious meal.
Tribute was also paid to retirees Diana Nichol who has been an IB math teacher since 1995 and Al Gabert, principal of NBCHS for the last 20 years.
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
The North Battleford Comprehensive is one of five Saskatchewan IB diploma schools, one of 148 diploma schools in Canada and one of 2,363 schools worldwide. Internationally, in 2011, 41,507 IB diplomas were awarded and 386,557 exams were written.
IB students in Grades 10 to 12 were honoured for their achievements. Certificates were handed out to the top student in each IB class, as well as to the runner-up. This year there are 79 certificate students in Grades 10 to 12 and nine diploma candidates.
Top Grade 10 recipients were Emily Jackson with the highest marks in Science 10E, French 10E, Foundations Pre-calculus 10IB, Foundations 20IB, Pre-calculus 20IB and second highest marks in English 10IB, Biology 20IB and History 10IB. Ainslie Millie had the highest mark in History 10I. Jenna Fan had the top mark in English 10IB and the second highest marks in Pre-calculus 20IB. Avery Saunders had the best mark in Biology 20IB. Ariana Dawyduk had the second highest mark in French 10E, while Erickson Ureta had the second best marks in Foundations Pre-calculus 10IB and Foundations 20IB. Allysha Dyck had the second highest marks in English 10IB and Science 10E.
Top Grade 11 recipients were Taylor Raiche with the top marks in French 20IB, Math B 30IB, Chemistry 20IB and 30IB, English 20IB, Biology 30IB and History 20IB. Taylor also had the second highest marks in Physics 20IB and Math C 30IB. Other top mark winners were Taisley Isaac in Physics 20IB, second place in Chemistry 20IB and French 20IB. Alec St. Marie had the best marks in Biology 30IB and second best in Math B30IB, chemistry 20IB and 30IB. Arsalan Anees was the top student in Math C30IB and second in Chemistry 20IB and 30IB as well as History 20IB. Janay Fox had second best marks in Chemistry 20IB and Biology 30 and Brooke Forbes was second in English 20IB.
Top Grade 12 recipients were Christianne Blais with top marks in French 30IB, English 30IB, IB Chemistry, History 30IB and Math 30IB. Rayden Saunders had top marks in Physics 30IB and second place marks in English 30IB, IB Chemistry, Math 30IB and History 30IB. Ben Hu was second highest in French 30IB and Spencer Cave had second highest marks in Physics 30IB.
This year's lone diploma candidate is Christianne Blais. There are five diploma candidates in Grade 11 - Arsalan Anees, Brandon Horrell, Alexandra Nordstrom, Taylor Raiche and Alec St. Marie. Allysha Dyck, Emily Jackson and Ainslie Millie are the Grade 10 diploma hopefuls.
The top diploma candidates in each grade are Emily Jackson, Grade 10; Taylor Raiche, Grade 11 and Christianne Blais, Grade 12.
