The Borden Museum held its annual meeting in the seniors' room March 27 with 12 out to hear the reports. Cyril Saunders gave the threshermen's report and spoke about the rental of porta-potties and building new steel portable bleachers in 2014.
Karen Kerr gave a fundraising report of activities in 2013, including garden tour, supper, grants, donations, 50/50 draw and selling pumpkins from the front garden.
Karen also gave the display report. Wedding dresses and animal art were featured the past two years. For 2014 it will be games children played, which will be an interactive exhibit. A geo-cache program is also planned for 2014. Other exhibits planned are Nancy Henn sketches of people from the past and 100 years of the Borden Co-op.
George Walker gave the building and chairman report. Student Darby Sutherland did painting of floors and pump, scraped the ramp and a new office was built in the lodge, Ted Mandziak did landscaping and the garden. In 2014 plans are to install new windows and doors in the lodge and the Diefenbaker house.
George also spoke about the 2013 flood and how museum articles about the floods of 1948 and 1956 helped the village with funding. He thanked all the board for their efforts over the year.
Heather Silcox reported on community outreach. Attendance from local people was low in 2013. The grand opening will be Diefenbaker Days June 7 and 8. Coupons for free cookies and beverages at the museum will be handed out at the sports grounds. They hope to have an archeology caravan on display in partnership with the school.
The River Valley Museum Network has been set up with all museums in the area. They meet to gather ideas. Heather is the co-networker.
Helen Sutherland thanked all the volunteers who help at the museum and at the threshing supper. She gave a brief history of how the museum got started back in 1988, the different buildings acquired, the many articles on loan or donated, displays over the years and the need for a donation of a working washer and spin dryer.
The financial report by Heather showed income of $19,208, of which $10,825 was grants, terms of $21,620 and expenses of $20,227, leaving a bank balance of $3,850.
On the board are George Walker, Helen Sutherland, Heather Silcox, Karen Kerr, Darlene Penner, Dorothy Fouhy, Wendell Dyck, Sharon Assman and Nadia Smith of Asquith. George is taking a leave of absence and the museum could always use more board members, so contact any of the board if you are interested.
Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper March 26, with over 40 members out to enjoy the meal and program. The birthday cakes and ice cream were brought by Art and Doreen Flath. Blowing out the candles for March were Art and Doreen Flath, Terry Petriew and Martha Rempel.
Rita Smith showed samples of easy to sew dresses that could be made to send to Third World countries. A sign-up list went around for people to take part in a sewing bee.
Rose Mandziak spoke of the casino bus once a month. A sign-up sheet was available. It is a 22-passenger bus and Langham and Radisson people could also go on the bus, either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
Lottie Petriew announced her resignation as president of the club so a new president will be elected at the annual meeting April 9.
Ed Neufled was MC for the program and he and Art Flath told a few jokes. Rose Mandziak sang two songs, accompanied by Ed on the guitar, and then the sing-a-long group directed by Marlene Derbawka and accompanied by Ed on guitar, sang. The group meets Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. for fun and to sing the old favourites.
Radisson Co-op held their roast beef supper, served by the Radisson Recreation Board, and annual meeting in the Radisson Town Hall March 25, with over 60 staying for the meeting. Bryan Clair was chairman for the meeting.
A report was heard from general manager Rob Schmidt, stating the co-op donated $615 from its barbecue to the Radisson Centennial Committee. An amalgamation vote was held last April and the Radisson Co-op joined with Battlefords & District Co-op Nov. 30, 2013. Schmidt thanked the board and staff for their effort and extra time with the amalgamation.
Certificates were given out to the directors in attendance: Bruce Flath for 19 years, Brian Clair for 10 years, Alvin Barth for 22 years, Chris Schultz for three years and Everitt Soule for two years. One to be given to Wade Schmidt for four years. Gus Kindt was given his 21 years before his passing earlier this year.
President Bryan Clair thanked the rec board for a great meal, the member support, the board and staff and gave special thanks to Bill Hosegood for his many years as president. Bryan is running for director on the Battlefords & District Co-op and would like members to attend the supper and annual meeting April 30 and vote for him.
Rob Schmidt gave the financial report showing gross margin at $343,274, operating expenses of $466,791, loss of operations of $123,517, FCL patronage refunds of $371,257 with net savings after taxes of $236,291. Patronage allocation to members sent out earlier was $145,696.
Since incorporation in 1939 up to Nov. 30, 2013, total sales at Radisson Co-op were $65,560,795. Members purchasing last year were 621, with 256 inactive members.
General manager of the Battlefords & District Co-op, Mike Nord spoke of the vision and detailed plan for the co-op, the upgrades, growth, safety issues and long- and short-term plans. Radisson members now have access to more products and services. In November, 2013, they had acquired Viterra sites in the Battlefords and now have fertilizer, bins and augers, hiring more staff. They upgraded the food store.
President Randy Graham congratulated Radisson on a successful year. The board will have a strategic plan for the next 10 years. There are nine directors on the board, each for a three-year term. He spoke of the equity program and dividends paid out, and how the Radisson Co-op number works at the Battleford Co-op.
Winning the door prizes were Mel Deagnon, Miriam Loessin, Woodsworth Baker and Cari Carpenter.
