MELFORT — The Melfort Multi-K rushed through Melfort again this year, for its 8th annual event.

Burke Johnstone got first in the Scotiabank 1K Kids Fun Run.

“At school I run all of recess,” Johnstone said. “I really like running and I just really wanted to do it.”

Other races in the Multi-K include the 5K, the 10K and the 21K.

For course director and MC for the race, Lyle Bittman, the marathon is a way for people to be active in the community.

“It’s important to get people going,” Bittman said. “Our motto is ‘promoting health and fitness in Melfort’ so anything that gets people moving, whether they’re running, walking, strolling or rolling. It’s really important to be active and healthy.”

Strolling was right, with some participants for the 1K Fun Run still being in strollers, but they were given medals none-the-less for their participation in the event – be it with a bit of assistance.

For Bittman, the planning starts a month after each race.

“We put about 11 months of planning in each event,” Bittman said.

Despite all of the time to organize it, he feels it pays off on race day.

“The payoff is visible in all the smiles on race day, and we’ve had such a great support from all of our sponsors and our participants from year after year, yeah it’s absolutely worth it.”
