Mud, bears, new homes, special events and visitors

The Timberland Rodeo went off as usual this last weekend, but a couple of showers during the day resulted in a lot of mud. This caused some problems but, as with any event, they carried on and completed as best they could.

In the North country there seems to be little if any fruit this year, so the bears are having a time finding food. They are digging up the ant hills for nourishment. You wouldn't want to provoke one in the forest; they might think you'd be good for dinner.

The trailer that sat across the road from Therese Crossland has been taken out and we hear there are plans to build a house on that location. New improvements are always welcome. A new piece is being built onto the front of the former home of the Henrys' cabin. We are also told the Walker house has been sold as has Judy and Willie Kuffert's house. We wish Judy and Willie well with their move to a new location.

Congratulations to Dave and Debbie Shepherd on their anniversary this week.

August this year has five Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, which won't happen again for 823 years so that does make it a significant happening.

Remember Cochin Days this weekend, Aug. 8, 9 and 10, and take in some of the events. And if not that, how about 'Those were the Days' at the Battlefords Museum Aug. 9, 10 and 11? Read the posters or ads for info about these events. Then there's Territorial Days at the agriculture complex starting Aug. 12 through to Aug. 15. Meet your friends and learn about the latest in agriculture development and visit the midway.

Next week there's action at the Do Drop In, Friday, Aug. 15, with Kaiser in the afternoon and canasta in the evening.

Arie and Pearl Hawkins enjoyed the company of her niece from Vancouver, Karla O'Regan, and they have her mother, Eugina Swayze from Saskatoon, visiting again. Pearl's grandson Blair Hawkins visited from Saskatoon, too. They do keep busy with other family coming and going at the campground for the summer.

Remember the next Meota community luncheon will be Aug. 15. This has become a popular gathering to enjoy a meal prepared, with some helpers, by our own Pearl Hawkins.

Word has come of the passing of Leona Rosvold of Regina, a couple of weeks ago. She used to spend her winters in Osoyoos and her summers in Chitek Lake.

Canasta winners Aug. 1 were Jack Stewart and Arlene Walker and second place winners were Paulette Neale and Janice Morton. In contract bridge Aug. 4, top score went to Vern Iverson and second to Joyce Antoine.

I think there was a mistake in the bridge names last week. Sorry but I wasn't where I could send the correction in, in time.
