Last week's headline stated that the school's enrolment increased this year. This is not accurate. Enrolment declined from last year. New students often move in during the year, so it may increase as the year progresses.
Brayden Harris, a Grade 9 student, shared this report. He was a member of the ball team that attended Western Canadians this summer in Irma, Alta. The tournament started on a Friday with two losses to Prince Albert and Napanee, Ont. The team bounced back Saturday with two huge wins against 100 Mile House, B.C., and the host team, Irma.
They played an early game Sunday. This was a must-win for the team to make the playoffs. They won the game by a large margin and advanced to the 3 versus 4 game against B.C. The team played well, winning the game and moving on to the semifinal against Ontario. It was a barnburner of a game but Martensville squeaked out with a victory. Later in the day, they faced Prince Albert in a repeat of last year's final.
Brayden stated they ran out of steam but came home with a silver medal for the second year in a row.
The senior boys' soccer team travelled to Rosthern for a game last Thursday. Maymont was ahead 2-0 and then Rosthern tied the game up. Maymont took the lead again and, with the extra time added on, Rosthern scored to tie the game. The boys played very well.
Riely Rookes, Connor Garrett and Cody Greenslade are playing football with the Hafford Vikings. They practise with the team, before school, in Hafford. They play every Friday. It is six-man football.
The Grades 2 through 7 classes now begin their morning with a five-minute around the gym. Research has stated physical activity helps with focus and concentration. The goal is to be able to run the five minutes, briskly, by Christmas.
The senior girls' volleyball team attended a tournament in Medstead on the weekend. They won their first two matches. They lost the next two matches and finished in about third place.
The SLC sponsored Spirit Days Sept. 15- 19. The first day was Crazy Hair Day. Way Back When Day was Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was Gender Bender Day, where boys dressed like girls and girls dressed like boys. Rainbow Day was Thursday and the week ended with School Spirit Day Friday. Students and staff were encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing clothing with the school logo or the school colours.
The SLC also sponsored noon hour activities.
Chase Fouhy and Kandice Walker took 20 high school students to the Battlefords and District Co-op Aquatic Centre for a scuba diving course Sept. 16. They spent the day learning the basics of scuba diving.
The elementary students are currently selling magazine subscriptions. The profits will go to the SLC for school projects.
