July 2, 2012: Community gathered to celebrate the 100th annual Minnehaha Picnic. Festivities were held at the site of the original Minnehaha School, on the hill west of Jackfish Creek. Over 100 signed the guest book.

Several attendees were sixth generation of the original pioneers who settled the area in the early 1900s.

A 100th anniversary cake was generously supplied by the Nash family, in memory of their mother Emma. The cake was cut by Vivian Hanson and Frank Poole. MC for the afternoon was Frank Poole. Traditional games held included shoe-kick, three-legged race, egg and spoon race, sack race, wheelbarrow race, shoe mix-up, pillow fight and tug-o-war.

A photo display from the past 100 years was set up in the hall by Sherri Grant. Early photos were from the collection of pioneer Mae Hood. The crowd gathered for a picture in front of the float made for the parade in Edam earlier that weekend.

A 100 balloon launch followed, with helium balloons being released to float across the hills. After a hearty potluck supper, socializing, and violin music the crowd dispersed home.

Names appearing on the 2012 register are as follows: Poole, Gratton, Andree, Harris, Mosimann, Sawchyn, Carson, Monteith, Jennings, Barr, Ferron, Morin, Nash, Hunter, Jones, Kyjawa, Weitzel, Proudfoot, Grant, Hanson, Greening, Tompkins, Elliott, Goodall, Stewart, Letwinetz, Weber, Sayers, Day, Boser, Ayre, Carver, Foster, Davies, Hrycyna, Bec, Cadrain, Ginter, Jamieson, Ottas, Rentz, Corbeil, Stuart, Schneider, Hood.

The Edam Historical Society officially dissolved as of Dec. 31. There are 17 history books left for sale at $85 each. You can purchase them from the RM office or the Edam Credit Union.

Donations of $2,500 each were made to: the museum, the community centre, the Edam Handi van, and the Edam First Responders. The Edam First Responders will be the recipients of the proceeds of the remaining books. Thank you to all who helped out in any way.

The Edam Ladies' Bonspiel will take place Feb. 8 and 9. Entries can be made to Stefanie Rogers at 306-397-2559 or Twila Doom at 306-397-2688. The entry fee per rink is $100. If you haven't curled in the new facility, now is your chance.

Thanks to the RM for being out and about the same day as the storm and getting the roads open. I'm also thankful for the seismic crew that was working south of Vawn as the ridges they put in the fields along the road I travel helped, too. The lines they laid out the day before were covered, but the grid road was passable.
