A Métis-themed production will be gracing the stage at the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts March 14.
The production is entitled Reunir by Pj Prudat. It is produced by the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company and will feature the 2013-14 Circle of Voices Youth.
The show is described in a news release as a "river of history flowing along the language of the Métis, the death of Métis men, and the survival of Métis women. Reunir takes place after the Battle of Batoche, centering on the character Virginie as she struggles to find a life in the midst of the Métis nation's displacement. Virginie's kohhom acts as a guide, sharing stories to comfort and invigorate young Virginie."
They add that in order to make the production more dynamic, the Circle of Voices youth delved into the depths of Métis history, learned some Michif language and also learned to sing in French.
Rehearsals have been ongoing for the show, with the first-time performers learning about such concepts as stage combat, dance choreography and voice in preparation for their roles.
The Circle of Voices youth is made up of Rachel Ducharme (Mary Ellen Burgess performance award recipient), Adam Eagle (third year U of S drama student), Morgan Kennedy (North Battleford oratory poetry winner), Ingrid Gomez (visual arts background specializing in coal), Lia Gomez (visual arts background), Brendan Austin Loonskin (background in dance), Sasha Shogga (model and Miss Teen Saskatoon 2011) and Kaylee Vincent (creative writer).
Also involved in the production are Circle of Voices alumni including director Curtis Peeteetuce, acting mentor Waylon Machiskanic, sound designer Cory Dallas Standing and stage manager Jennifer Dawn Bishop.
It will be a one-afternoon showing, taking place at 1 p.m. at the Dekker Centre. Tickets are $8 and are available at the Dekker Centre box office.
