Meota Lions strong supporters of their community

The report in the February monthly newsletter tells of all the good causes the Meota Lions Club have donated to in the last two years 鈥 it is amazing and surely explains how they play their part in building this community and assisting other needy causes. It is an amazing list totalling more than $31,000. I would say, 鈥渃ongratulations.鈥

The next wellness clinic will be held at the Do Drop In on Feb. 18 between 8:40 and 10:40 a.m.

The store will be opening at 9:30 a.m. weekdays. This week it was closed Monday to Wednesday for their Lunar New Year celebrations in Edmonton, which Eden and Gloria attended.

The town workers took advantage of the nice weather last week and took down the Christmas decorations. Thanks for putting them up and for taking them down. We聽 appreciate this effort. I was wrong when I said earlier that SaskPower put them up, as they do at Chitek Lake. Sorry about that.

Feb. 5, Norwegian whist was played in Towers II with five tables in play. Top score was by Rita Peterson, second was Muriel Tebay, third was Pat Chapman and tied for fourth place were Judy Walker, Anna Tucker and Linda Ard. The weather was nice, the lunch tasty and a great social time enjoyed by all.

聽The Meota Combines are sitting in third place behind the Hafford Hawks in the SPHL standings, as of last week.

聽The 2016 Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race will not take place this year because of weather conditions this winter. It is held annually out of Prince Albert. The trails are bare in places, icy in others and safety for the dogs is the top priority. Next year they will be organizing a bigger and better event as it will be their 20th anniversary 鈥 Feb. 20-25, 2017. There will be 17 disappointed mushers this year, but expect more than 130 next year to take part in celebrating the anniversary.

Last weekend, Yvonne and Philip Lacerte from Rocky Mountain House, Alta. came out to visit their mothers 鈥 Yvette Lessard and Gwen Lacerte 鈥 and enjoyed the birthday party held for Sheila Lessard in Battleford.

Prairie North Health Region is offering a new program for area residents at the Community Complex from 1:30 to 4 p.m., starting Feb. 11 and running for six weeks ending March 17. It is called 鈥淟ive Well With Chronic Pain.鈥

Saturday, the Edam Three Stars hosted a game against the Delisle Bruins and the game ended with a score of 5-3 in their favour. This is Game 1 of SHA Provincial Peewee 鈥淐鈥 playoffs. It is great fun watching these little guys鈥 clean skating and just trying to score a goal, never mind getting penalties for roughing or fighting. There was a good turnout of spectators from far out areas.

聽The whist drive held in Vawn on Feb. 6 was well attended and a lot of fun. A lot of visiting went on and the children played with colouring books and toys. A tasty lunch followed before heading home in blowing snow.

Our local MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford constituency, Larry Doke, will be at the Do Drop In on Feb. 12 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and wants to hear from people about their concerns. Try to attend and voice your opinion.

There are so many snowmobile rallies coming up, one couldn鈥檛 take them all in. Chitek Lake is Feb. 13, Leoville is Feb. 27, Rabbit Lake is March 5 and Meota is Feb. 21. The annual Jackfish Lake Ice Fishing Derby is Feb.13 on Jackfish Lake. The Provincial Snowmobile Festival in North Battleford is Feb. 26-27. Minnehaha Rally is March 6 in aid of their hall maintenance. Watch for posters or ads for all these events. Have fun and ride safely.

At the Edam Seniors鈥 Center they are holding a Sweetheart Bingo on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. raising money for their handi-van.

There鈥檚 a Valentine dance at the Denholm Hall on Feb.13 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Phone 306-481-3509 for information.

聽A Valentine tea is being held Feb. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Do Drop In where the seniors will be offering cakes, cookies and drinks.

Duplicate bridge Feb. 2 in Meota found top score by Jetta and Terence Dasilva. Second high were Joyce Antoine and Robert Iverson and third were Eric Callbeck and Maureen Campbell. In town Feb. 4, the top scores were by Glen and Julie Moore. Second high were Donna Scherman and Catriona Winterholt and third place went to Margaret Dyck and Joyce Antoine. These dedicated players enjoy every evening of their gatherings, with four tables as a rule.

The next council meeting is Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Contact the village office with your concerns, in writing or phone 306-892-2277. Stop in and pick up information regarding the possible switch in garbage pickup via Loraas bins and offer your opinion.

Following the changing weather temperatures we鈥檝e been having, Robert Iverson advises people to check their roof vents for ice and snow to be sure they are open and clear and also your eaves, which can build up ice so the water ends up getting under the shingles the next warm spell we have.

聽Contract bridge was played in the Do Drop In Feb. 8 with high score by Terence Dasilva with Eric Callbeck coming in second. It was another good evening.

Correction

We apologize, due to our ignorance, for altering this paragraph in the Meota News column last week. As the author pointed out, it was arrogant of us to assume we knew where she had gone and what she had seen.

The annual Robbie Burns Night was held in the Masonic Hall in North Battleford Jan. 30 with a full-house turnout. The delicious meal followed the piping-in of the haggis by two pipers. Entertainment by a young laddie on his violin and lassies who performed the highland dances was appreciated. It was a delightful evening.
