Maymont seniors will be selling tickets for a fundraiser for the Maymont seniors’ centre. Tickets are one for $2 and three for $5. There will be two draws made for a nativity scene and a goodie basket. Contact one of the senior members for tickets or come to the Discovery Co-op mall Nov. 14. Car-Mel Country will be entertaining.

The Memorial Cross, more often referred to as the Silver Cross, was first instituted by Order-in-Council 2374, Dec. 1, 1919. It was awarded to mothers and widows, whoever was the next of kin, of Canadian soldiers who died on active duty or whose death was consequently attributed to such duty. The crosses were sent automatically to mothers and wives who qualified and could be worn by the recipients any time, even though they were not themselves veterans. The cross was engraved with the name, rank and service number of the son or husband.

Soldiers killed from this area in the First World War, 1914-18, were Richard Brehon and Alfred Bohn. Soldiers killed from this area in the Second World War, 1939-45, were Walter Andrew, Elmer Andrew, Jim Crozier, Donald McCorkle, Fred Best and Hoarce Knight.

A rehabilitation committee composed of 22 citizens called a meeting April 23, 1945, to decide on a suitable project for a war memorial. A memorial hall was decided upon to be known as the Maymont Community Memorial Hall Co-operative Association Limited.

Billy Connelly and Jeff Richards from the Other Side were shown in a picture featured on the front page of the Arts & Life section of the Star Phoenix. In the photo they are sitting on the steps outside of the Maymont Memorial Hall. There were stories about a soldier haunting the Maymont Hall.

I contacted Angle Entertainment to see when the episode would be on TV and was informed we were the 13th episode. Two have already been shown. The person I spoke with wasn’t sure if they would take a break during the holiday season but she figures our episode should be on around Jan. 2, so check out APTN. She said if you are a Shaw or SaskTel customer you should be able to see the Maymont episode.
