MELFORT — The 31st annual Show and Shine car show in Melfort is postponed until provincial regulations begin to ease, but expected to go ahead later this summer.
Traditionally the event is held each year on Father’s Day, bringing car show enthusiasts from around the province to show off their vehicles around Main Street.
The event is also an opportunity to promote Melfort businesses, attracting customers with special deals at local stores.
This year’s event is organized by the Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s a great time to see what Melfort has to offer,” said Cam Lee, the Chamber’s executive director.
“A lot of people come and spend a day or more, it gives them a chance to wander around Melfort, take a look at the skate park and all that sort of stuff. Poke their nose in a few businesses to see what they have to offer.”
Lee said that under current regulations, organizing the event for Father’s Day would create multiple challenges, including lack of socializing and limitations on out-of-community visitors.
The Chamber doesn’t have a specific date set for this year’s show yet, but they’re hoping for around August.
“We just thought rather than holding it on Father’s Day weekend this year, we would delay it a little bit so people have more fun and be a little more free to walk around cars and talk to people,” Lee said.
“It’s a little early to say exactly when that will happen, but we’re certainly hopeful that by later this summer when more and more people are vaccinated, when some people start getting their second vaccines and being fully vaccinated that will take place.”
The 2020 Melfort Show and Shine was cancelled due to the pandemic.
