MELFORT — In response to the heatwave, Melfort has extended the hours at Spruce Haven Spray Park, opening at 10 a.m. daily and going from closing at 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The spray park operates daily on a self-activated sensor system. After operational hours, the system shuts down, preventing use.
Brent Lutz, Melfort’s director of development planning and community relations, said that as more people were spending time at the spray park in the heat, the city reviewed water usage and found the extra hour of use to be low impact.
“Obviously we’ve been experiencing some pretty dry hot weather and people have been spending a lot of time outdoors,” Lutz said.
“It’s self-activated, so if it’s a cool day and people decide past 7 o’clock it’s too cold to be out in the cold water at the splash park, then they’re not going to be activating the sensors and there won’t be any water use.”
He said the city currently has no plans in place to revert the hours in the future, although it remains open to review.
“If it doesn’t present any problem leaving it operating until 8 o’clock, I don’t see why we would go back to changing those hours.”
