MELFORT — The Melfort Public Library is holding an all-ages scavenger hunt in order to give the community something safe to do that isn’t online.

“Since we had to be closed, we’re just trying to think of some things we can do for our patrons, just our community in general to get out and do things,” said Penny Markland, Melfort’s head librarian.

This is the library’s second scavenger hunt since the pandemic hit, with the library having success with an earlier in April.

“We found the first scavenger hunt was so popular, and we think the reason was because the amount of online stuff out there is just overwhelming. There is just a lot of it, and some of it is pretty cool and neat, but the scavenger hunt gets you out of the house with something to do with the kids.”

Participants of the scavenger hunt are asked to find a list of 10 things in the natural world and then take a photo. The ten things they are asked to find and photograph are: a bird, a pond, a dandelion, a bug, a rock bigger than you, a pinecone, clouds, purple flowers, a four-legged animal, and something in the library’s I Spy window that is found in nature.

Participants are then asked to pick their favourite of the 10 photos or make a collage of a few or all of their photos.

While all the photos aren’t required to be submitted, Markland said the library trusts that the patron will have completed all ten tasks before submitting their favourite photo.

The photos are submitted by posting them in the comment section on the library’s scavenger hunt post on their Facebook page.

The scavenger hunt, which was made public on May 13, will run for about two weeks before a winner is chosen.

A draw will occur to decide a winner. The winner will receive a package of age appropriate books and other treats when the library reopens.

“We miss all our patrons and we’re really looking forward to whenever it is that we’re able to open up again,” Markland said.
