Meeting addresses wind farm feasibility

Here we are facing the last week of October, and yes, we have had our first taste of snow, albeit short and sweet. What a surprise to come out of church at about 12:30 Sunday to a full -fledged snow squall.

Here we are facing the last week of October, and yes, we have had our first taste of snow, albeit short and sweet. What a surprise to come out of church at about 12:30 Sunday to a full -fledged snow squall. I guess this is the harbinger of things to come.

A group of about 20 farmers met in the community hall Oct. 20 to hear Kevin Foster from Mainstream Renewable Power, Toronto, discuss the feasibility of creating a wind farm in the Rabbit Lake area. This meeting was a preliminary gathering to judge the interest for such a project. According to Foster, wind maps indicate that Rabbit Lake and the area west of the village have prime conditions for such a venture.

Although the initial monitoring of average wind speed would take from a year to possibly two, and then construction another like period of time, a wind farm could be in the offing in about five years. The first step would be to erect 80 - 100-metre high meteorological towers (MET) to gain an accurate gauge of above surface wind speed. Farmers would be asked to lease portions of land, often less arable land, for turbine construction at some time. Coffee, doughnuts and informal discussion followed the presentation.

In my last article I failed to mention Doug Lamb's "I'll get you back" plot. A few years ago, Doug's wife Doreen threw a surprise party to celebrate Doug's 65th birthday. Even though Doug is very much a man about town, no one let the gig slip and he was totally taken off guard.

Revenge is such a sweet venture. As it was Thanksgiving weekend and Doreen was busy helping prepare the annual Thanksgiving supper, Doug decided to invite friends and family to share in a celebration commemorating Doreen's big 65. There she was cooking and helping as a few friends dropped in. During the day Doug and Doreen's daughter, Jolene and family arrived for Thanksgiving. Finally, as mid afternoon approached and Doreen was preparing to bring her family to the fall supper, lo and behold, a fall supper broke forth at her house complete with all the happy 65th birthday wishes. Happy birthday, Doreen; and way to go, Doug.

Finally it seems like only a month ago I mentioned that our snow birds were arriving home after spending the winter in the USA. This week I heard them talking about getting ready to head south by the end of the month. Where did the summer go?
