On April 8 Medstead Central School hosted an event to celebrate random acts of kindness. Organized by the faculty in conjunction with the School Community Council and the Medstead Leisure Life program, the potluck dinner drew a crowd that gathered in the spirit of community.
While the adults brought a unique spread of foods, from homemade breads and meatballs to vegetarian dishes, the students had an opportunity for face painting and a dance in the gymnasium. The dinner itself began at 5:30 p.m. where long tables were set up for a shared dinner.
After eating, the parents, teachers, and members of the Medstead Leisure Life program gathered to discuss opportunities to engage in random acts of kindness. The evening spurred a number of initiatives to increase community spirit and student wellbeing.
The event was a continuation of the Friends for Life program, which has been active at the school, promoting student mental health and wellbeing. Though the program has come to its conclusion, the facilitator, Evelyn Larson, will be returning to Medstead in early May to host a community event to further discuss the focal points of the program.
In keeping with the community spirit fostered by the school’s April 8 event, the Medstead Fire Department hosted its annual fundraising burger bash on April 10. As spring continues, both events and random acts of kindness increase in frequency.
