MCS holds their own version of the Winter Olympics

This was a very busy week at Maymont Central School. The week began with the Achy Breaky Heart fundraiser sponsored by our student leadership council, the SLC. They played the song every recess and noon until staff and students raised $40 to stop the music. It wasn't long before the money was raised.

They also sold kiss-grams during the week. These were a bag of Hershey Kisses you could purchase for someone else. They were delivered at noon Thursday.

The S?C also sponsored Pink and Red Day. The Grades 2 and 3 class and 4 and 5 class are now tied for participation points during dress-up days. The winning class will receive a pizza party at the end of the year. The judge wouldn't count the students who were absent that day, even though assured they always participate. Oh well, better luck next time.

The SLC's biggest undertaking for the week was the annual Winter Olympics. These were held Feb. 14. The weather was nice, so they were able to hold many of the events outdoors. They are also very lucky to be able to use the attached skating rink. A number of events were held on the ice surface.

Since the Winter Olympics are being held in Sochi, Russia this year, the SLC chose four teams from that region of the world as the teams for the MCS Winter Olympics. The teams were: Turkmenistan, Krygyzstan, Tajikstan and Uzbekistan. The teams consisted of elementary and high school students as well as staff members.

The day began with a team-building activity. Each team was given a bit of information about their country and then had to create a chant and present it in the gym in front of the other teams. This was followed by a bathroom tissue wrap. A team captain, from each team, was wrapped in bathroom tissue by the other members of their team. The idea was to cover them completely. The team with the best wrap was awarded points.

Following the team building, the elementary students went to their activities and the high school went to theirs. Elementary teams participated in skating and speed skating, ringette, snow painting, snow soccer and a quiz for points. The quiz tested their knowledge of cartoons, music, Olympic events, movies and a random category.

The high school students competed in a quiz, snow soccer, human curling, a tower building activity called a Quidwitch and broomball. The day concluded with team tug of wars and toboggan races. The staff tug of war team was able to win over the Grade 11 and 12 classes.

The winning team was Kyrgyzstan, with team captains Conner Garrett and Sean Brehon. The team was under the guidance of Mr. Lockwood, Ms. Gillatt, Mrs. Cardin and Mrs. Joy Domak. They did not receive gold medals, but rather a lot of fun memories.

The SLC did an amazing job of planning the day and overseeing the events. Thanks are due to Kcarli Maxwell, Carlee Hamilton, Sean Brehon, Patience Brown, Darby Milman, Jan Friesen, Audrey Friesen, Kayla Gray, Cassidy Serhienko, Meghan Brehon and Janna Ferris for all their hard work.

Thanks also to Mr. Nickell and his class for organizing a pizza lunch. Also, thanks to the parents for helping tie skates. It was greatly appreciated. One last thank you to Glen Milman for keeping the ice in such great shape for MCS to use during the day.

The senior boys' curling team participated in regional playoffs in Rosthern Feb. 14. They were unable to move on to the provincial playoffs but played very well and made the school very proud with their sportsmanship. Team members were Tyson Wawryk, Richie Acaster, Connor Rothenburger, Ty Fouhy and their fifth player, Brayden Harris. Thanks to Kari Gray, Anita Prescesky and the parent volunteers for a successful curling season.

Conner Garrett competed in a kickboxing tournament in Prince Albert. He did very well and won two gold medals and a silver.

Sympathy is extended to Anita Prescesky and her family on the passing of her Uncle Roy.

Congratulations to staff members, Ryan and Krista Nickell on the birth of their baby girl. Congratulations to Keller on becoming a big brother. Baby was certainly a wonderful Valentine's Day gift.

MCS staff hopes everyone is having a wonderful February break.
