Maymont students play in Saskatoon prior to Blades' game

The groundhog saw his shadow so we are going to have six more weeks of winter. The good news is there should be lots of snow for the school's Winter Olympics and ski trip.

Several members of the Radisson Oilers Novice Hockey team played a brief hockey game before the start of the Saskatoon Blades' game Jan. 29. They also played during the intermissions.

Team members from Maymont Central School who participated were Jasymn and Paige Harris, Tristen Rempel, Logan Rookes and Monte Schmidt. No doubt they were very excited as they skated on to the big ice surface and then got to watch the Blades play hockey.

The soccer team travelled to Langham for an exhibition game Jan. 30. This week they play in Cut Knife and Kerrobert. The junior team plays in North Battleford Thursday and, if they win their game, they will make the playoffs and play on the weekend.

The Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 house league teams are currently playing floor hockey. They have had some very exciting games. When floor hockey is completed, ringette will start.

Chess Club has started for the elementary students on Tuesdays. Mrs. Stott and Mrs. Jackson share their knowledge of the game with any students who are interested. This is done at noon. You never know, MCS may produce the next Bobby Fisher.

The curling teams participated in playoffs Tuesday and Wednesday in Spiritwood. Three teams represented the school. The senior girls' team is Kcarli Maxwell, Ice Maxwell, Tori Hamp and Arielle Hamp. The senior boys' team members are Tyson Wawryk, Richie Acaster, Conner Rothenburger and Ty Fouhy. Maymont also sent a mixed team. The team members are Sean Brehon, Carlee Hamilton, Matthew Favel and Tia Montgrand.

Connor Garrett, Grade 10, participated in a karate competition in Dalmeny on the weekend. He was in the 15-17 age category. He won a bronze medal in point sparring, a gold medal in weapon sparring and a gold medal in kick-boxing. He also won a bag of beef jerky in the pushup competition. Well done, Connor!

Katy Schmidt and Autumn Amson play on a volleyball club team in Martensville. They attended the Sask. Cup tournament in Yorkton on the weekend. There were 25 teams participating in the tournament. The girls played a lot of volleyball and finished 15th out of the 25 teams. Well done, girls.

We would like to wish Nate Starycki a happy birthday Feb. 3. He is still in the Calgary hospital. Staff and students sure miss his happy, smiling face around the school, and hope he had a happy birthday in Calgary.

The SLC will be holding several activities during February. Beginning Feb. 10 and going to Feb. 13, they will be playing the Billy Ray Cyrus song, Achy Breaky Heart, every recess and noon hour. In order to stop the song, the school must raise $40. They will also sponsor Red and Pink Day, Feb. 13.

There is a competition among all the classrooms to have the highest percentage of students participate in the spirit days throughout the year. The winning class will receive a pizza party. Right now, it is a very close competition between the Grade 2 and 3 class and the Grade 4 and 5 class. The Grades 4 and 5s are ahead by a narrow margin.

Our annual Winter Olympics will be held Feb. 14. The theme for this year's Olympics will be Harry Potter. It should be great fun if the weather co-operates.

The travel club is starting to get excited. They depart April 18. The departure date will come very quickly.
