Maymont store with long history to be demolished

Munn's store is soon to be demolished. It's so sad when a part of history comes down. The Maymont Trading Company was built in 1906 by John Reid and Robert McLaren, operating until approximately 1917 when Mr. J. Patterson bought the business.

Munn's store is soon to be demolished. It's so sad when a part of history comes down.

The Maymont Trading Company was built in 1906 by John Reid and Robert McLaren, operating until approximately 1917 when Mr. J. Patterson bought the business. McLaren left the partnership to take over the post office which he operated for many years. Jim Reid had the original butcher shop in the basement of the store.

Mr. Merkley and Mr. Lane bought Patterson's business. Later Mr. Werb bought out Merkley and Lane. Mr. H Friedman then bought the business and later sold it to Nathan Friedman.

In 1945 Myrtle and Nathan Friedman sold the business to Louis Karpan. During the five years the Karpans owned it, his brother-in-law, Walter Barchuk, went into partnership with him for one and a half years. Karpan sold it to Ted Saunders in 1950. Throughout the years Dorothy Prynault and Bert Robbins worked for Ted Saunders.

Ted retired because of ill health and in January 1973 sold the store to Rod and Joyce Munn. The store was known as Munn's Lucky Dollar Store and offered 26 years of dedicated service to the community. Changing times forced them to close Dec. 31, 1999.

Thanks to Mary Carpentier who supplied me with this information and the picture of Rod and Joyce Munn.

Please join us Oct. 26 for this year's Legends, the fourth legends event in Maymont. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8. Tickets are $15, an excellent price for a night out. Call Carol or Mel Deagnon at 306-389-2440 or hall members Mary and Kari Carpentier, Judy Gallie, John Reddekopp, Dale Beaudoin, Jay Babineau or Bonnie and Neil Milman. Tickets can be picked up in North Battleford or at the door. Look for posters.

Our performers this year will be Kitty Wells performed by Helmay Lowen, Anne Murray performed by Doreen Duchnitski and John Denver performed by Mel Deagnon. A tribute to Rita McNeil will be performed by Shelley Bloom, a tribute to George Jones by Carl Ross and one song as a tribute to Stompin' Tom by surprise guests. Our backup band will be no other than Jon Sloan with Erin Foreman, Doreen Duchnitski, Leeanna Louis and Thelma Boychuk - all great musicians.

I'm sure Maymont's Mel Deagnon, Car-Mel Country, will do a great job singing some John Denver hits. As always Mel will have surprises for the crowd, but no, not throwing scarves this round.

John Denver was born Dec. 31, 1943 at Roswell, NM. Christened Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. and the son of an air force officer, Denver was constantly moved from state to state and country to country. It was in Tucson, Az., that his grandmother gave him his first acoustic guitar, a gift that would prove an icebreaker when meeting other students at the many new schools in which he was placed. He began performing at Leadbetter's night club in West Los Angeles and had a major breakthrough when he replaced Chad Mitchell of The Chad Mitchell Trio.

In 1968 he struck out on his own. From 1969 through 1975, Denver was the top-selling recording artist, appearing on both country and pop charts. His peak year was 1975, when he won the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year award and was selected the American Guild of Variety Artists' Singing Star of the Year as well.

He did some acting. His most memorable role came in 1977 when he starred opposite George Burns in the hit comedy, Oh, God! Following this, his record sales began to decline and he made fewer movies and television specials.

He became something of a political activist, with his main focus being environmental issues. He was killed Oct. 12, 1997, when the plane he was piloting crashed into Monterey Bay, Calif.

Names are coming in for our trade show. If you still want to be one of our vendors, please call Carol at 306-389-2440. The date is Nov. 16 at Maymont Memorial Hall.
