What is with this winter? The days are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger and the temperature is getting colder. What is with -34 C on Feb. 25? It seems hard to believe that we are experiencing global warming.
Speaking of 鈥渨arming,鈥 several of our community have returned or are soon to return from warm spots. Dave and Nancy Penley and Jim and Elaine Tomkins enjoyed Hawaii, Alan and Shelly Laughlin enjoyed the Dominican Republic, Al and Deb Martens and family enjoyed Cuba, Gerry Miller, Colleen Woodcock, Cam and Chris MacDonald have enjoyed their time in Mexico. I have to say though that as nice as it is on a Caribbean beach it is also nice to be home, even if it is 40 degrees colder. Isabelle McLennan and Loreen Becotte did their travelling in British Columbia, while Don and Naomi did theirs in Manitoba. Randy and Kathy Aumack avoided some winter by heading the United States for a few weeks. All returned home safe and sound.
There are always things to keep people occupied around Rabbit Lake. Ice fishing has been fairly good with a good catch of perch being reported. Recently getting on the lake due to the deep snow has been an issue. There is still a month left in the season. If fishing isn鈥檛 your thing you could do some fabulous snowmobiling. Reports are that the best snow in the country is right here around Rabbit Lake. Check out the annual snowmobile rally March 7. Registration is at the community hall. The Rabbit Lake and District Museum Committee will be starting the day with a pancake and egg breakfast. As of now the weather is predicted to be perfect. Remember last year鈥檚 rally with the minus 54 morning temp? So if neither snowmobiling nor fishing is to your liking you could take in the Rabbit Lake Lutheran Church deep fried turkey supper March 21 followed by an evening of Kaiser. Burger nights are still going on at the arena on Wednesdays.
Over the past few weeks various events have taken place. On Feb 7, Rose Gill Lodge hosted a Kaiser tournament and saw a good turnout. Albert Colbe ended up with top prize. Around Valentine鈥檚 Day Rose Gill Lodge sold handmade chocolates that the residents had made. Sales were very good and surpassed initial expectations. The money is used for the residents鈥 fund. Now I see pots in the windows of the lodge and small tomato plants emerging. From the number I see I am sure some will be for sale. Barb Knutson seems to be the master gardener.
The Rabbit Lake Branch of the Lakeland library continues its treat of the month program. The January winner was Keelan Kowerchuk and in February it was Eric Kuffert. Glen Freethy, librarian, continues to feature new books on interesting topics. The Monday night quilting group continues to meet at the Rabbit Lake Seniors鈥. I鈥檓 sure they will have a show and tell evening in the spring.
The Rabbit Lake Hall Board sponsored the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. About 60 people came to enjoy the supper.
Feb. 27, friends gathered at the seniors鈥 centre to meet Oliver Vandergucht who was born at the end of December. The baby shower was for Oliver, and shared with his mom, Katherine (Hildebrand) and dad, Dave Vandergucht.
Some upcoming events to pencil into your calendar are the Easter Sunday Service at the community Hall April 5 and Seedy Saturday that is being planned for April 19 at the community hall. I understand this is a chance to acquire garden seeds and some gardening information. If you are interested in the gardening contact Glen Freethy at home or at the library.
Rabbit Lake would like to welcome JK Kitchens to the business community. Jeanette Krelow will be offering lunches at Rabbit Lake Hotel on Mondays beginning March 2. Coffee is still available at the seniors鈥 on Monday mornings and Monday afternoons. This is a good chance to visit and socialize with friends.
I am really pleased to see that Elaine Woloshyn has decided to bring the news from the Mayfair community. Although we are certainly going to the play in Mayfair I will let her tell you all about it!
I know that this is still sometime away but don鈥檛 forget the Carlton Trail Jamboree on the first weekend in July.
