The September long weekend is coming up. That means the kids are going back to school and community clubs and agencies will be starting up their regular events over the next several weeks.

Some of the things to watch for include activities for seniors. At Hillcrest Centre in Battleford, for example, look for opportunities to play pool, Kaiser and other games, as well as regular meetings, potluck meals, a singing group and a knitting group. They even have a computer room.

The Battlefords Slawa Center at 792 - 108th St. in North Battleford will be getting busier as well. In addition to activities for Ukrainian seniors, the centre also holds cultural events and hosts other groups, such as the Svoboda Dancers, the Ukrainian Cultural Society and the Ukrainian Studies Group. The North Battleford Grand Squares square dancing group also uses Slawa.

There are more activities for seniors at the North Battleford Citizens Action Now Club's leisure centre at 1501 - 101st St. in North Battleford. The club provides sociability and fellowships through card games and tournaments, birthday parties and special occasion events.

For over-50s, there is the Pioneer Association which owns a hall at 792 - 101st St. in North Battleford. They hold dances, birthday parties, potluck meals and jam sessions.

There are also a number of service clubs in the Battlefords for those who like to get involved in community service. There are several Lions groups, including the Battleford 2000 Lions Club, the Historic Battleford Lions Club, the North Battleford Bonaventure Lions Club and the North Battleford Lions Club Inc. There is also a Kinsmen Club and a K-40 Club. The Battlefords also has a Kiwanis Club, a Rotary Club that has been operating since 1920 and the SaskTel Pioneers, consisting of retired, working and previous employees of SaskTel.

Fraternal service organizations include the North Battleford Elks and Royal Purple, the Battlefords Shrine Club, the Ionic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Order of United Commercial Travellers of America and the Sons of Norway.

And all this is before even beginning to look at recreation and sports for kids!
