Manoeuvring around dog droppings at parks frustrating

With summer this far advanced, you are either vibrating with anxiety at the thought of only a few weeks left of summer, or you are experiencing happiness - or sadness - at the thoughts of your kids heading back to school in three weeks and a bit, or

With summer this far advanced, you are either vibrating with anxiety at the thought of only a few weeks left of summer, or you are experiencing happiness - or sadness - at the thoughts of your kids heading back to school in three weeks and a bit, or you are busy planning for the upcoming harvest. Whatever keeps you preoccupied, drive safe on the highways and enjoy every dose of sunshine you can take in.

Even the Paw Park, an off-leash dog park set up in Unity, asks pet owners to clean up after their pets. It is frustrating to go to a public park or beach and have to manoeuvre around dog droppings when clearly responsible pet owners should be looking after these problems themselves. We should all be able to enjoy the great outdoors without suffering the consequences of stepping in, or having children playing in, these leftovers from pets.

I must say, we've been going to Battlefords Provincial Park for many years and this is the first time ever we have had the gate girls tell us there is a bear in the park. We never did see it but it was certainly the talk at many campsites during our stay there.

The Senior Cardinals are gearing up for their provincials this weekend, hosted right here in Unity. The Cards face off against Rosetown in the 4 p.m. game Friday. There will be three games Saturday and Sunday hosts the championship finals. There will be a beer gardens on grounds, a 50/50 all weekend and a silent auction with items including autographed jerseys from Scott Hartnell, Braden Holtby, Curtis Glencross and the Medicine Hats Mavericks WMBL team.

Blake Robertson was part of the Lloyd Twins baseball team who captured their provincial midget title July 26 weekend. Blake and his team will be heading to Swift Current to compete at Western Canadians Aug. 16 weekend.

The community is keeping tabs on Unity's own Rhett Feser as he competes at Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., with Team Saskatchewan. As of Sunday, Aug. 4, Team Sask had two wins and one loss. I will keep you posted next week on the rest of this story.

The UK Royals competed at Western Canadian Junior B Fastball Championships in Leduc, Alta., July 25, 26, 27 and 28. Winning this title last year gave them an early target on their back. With a 3-3 record, they headed into playoffs and were unable to advance. This team saw much success in their first two seasons and, although the dynamics will change somewhat with several graduating players, the remaining players are anxious to return to the field in purple power.

Summer Fun Centre is ending Aug. 15. It's a great place for kids becoming bored with summer to take part in a fun, safe and creative environment. Kids ages 5-11 can drop in for only $5 for the day.

The Unity Community Centre elevator is operational. After some grant funding and donations, this long overdue addition to our community centre was welcomed wholeheartedly. This will make access to the upper hall much easier for those who need a hand ascending that long stairway, as well as those people who need to haul numerous loads of supplies up for catering or bartending at events.

Remember the 30th anniversary celebration tea and display for the Terry Fox Run, Sept. 8. The actual date of the Terry Fox Run will be Sept. 22 so as not to conflict with any other events.

The fifth annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run takes place Sept. 15. Register online or pick up a pamphlet at Heitt's Plumbing And Heating. It's a day full of fun, wellness and a fundraising initiative to support the annual Candace Heitt bursary at UCHS as well as continue the walking path project at the health centre.

Coffee row conversation was alive with talk of the big high speed chase that took place July 30 involving many RCMP from the area. Even though the event has come and gone, it brings to the conversation table the importance of recognizing unusual or suspicious activity in our community. And excited reviews of the Rider season are still a regular topic.

August historical moments were brought up including tomorrow, Aug. 9, being the 39th anniversary of the resignation of Richard Nixon from the U.S. presidency, Aug 16 being the 36th anniversary of the death of the King, Elvis Presley, and Aug. 31 being the 16th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana.

So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
