Maidstone and District News: Waseca athlete earns bronze at Canada Games

Pie bingo returns to the Legion Hall.

MAIDSTONE — Congratulations to our Aug. 20 newlyweds. Callie (Przybilla) and Shawn Carson were married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at his grandparents’ (Carson) farm; they reside in Maidstone. Teagan (Pegg) and Joe Brown were married at Blueberry Hill golf course by Turtle Lake, and make their home in La Ronge. We wish all of you happiness always.

Waseca’s Jenna McFadyen brought home a bronze medal for Team Saskatchewan in the women’s 3,000 metre steeplechase event and a silver medal in the 5,000M female race (with teammate Jasmine Fehr winning gold) at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont. Way to go, Jenna.

After taking the first of three in the NSRBL finals, Standard Hill Lakers lost at home in the second game, prompting game three at Wilkie Aug. 17 where they lost a heartbreaking 5-4 contest. Congratulations to Wilkie Brewers on winning the championship. Lakers hope to get started on the Nic Weston memorial gazebo project this fall at Silver Lake with funds raised throughout the season.

Maidstone’s U13 Lakers battled hard at the Westerns in Estevan last weekend. They won on Friday 15-5 over Manitoba, on Saturday lost to British Columbia 17-4 and won against Estevan 19-1, then lost to Alberta in a nailbiter 11-9 Sunday morning. The kids have reached the end of their ball season and thank all the Maidstone ball community who were behind them the whole way.

We’re sorry to see Epic Printing closing their doors in Maidstone but Laura Quinn-Rogers let us know they’re not far away. “We’ve moved operations to Turtle Tracks at 1-228 Main Street in Turtleford. Open Thursdays and Fridays 8 to 5 (closed 12:30-1:30). We appreciate all our loyal customers. Sad to move but necessary.” Thank you, Kevin and Laura, for serving us so well.

Maidstone Health Care Auxiliary’s pie bingos were sure missed during COVID shutdowns so we’re glad to see they’ll resume this fall. Areas responsible for pies and workers each week are: Sept. 14 – Lilydale; Sept. 21 – Eldon; Sept. 28- Dry Gully/Milleton/Dee Valley; Oct. 12 – West of Highway 21; Oct. 19 – 4th Avenue East and West; Oct. 26 – 2nd Street East. Area residents will be contacted. These games are always a big hit for young and old alike, so be sure to come out and support your health care auxiliary. I love bingo and pie, so this is a winner for me.

Other upcoming events: Sept. 7 - museum corn roast 5 to 7 p.m.; Sept. 12 - minor hockey general meeting 7 p.m.; Sept. 22 - Sparks-Brownies first meeting 6 p.m. CE Wing; bowling resumes in September with leagues starting in October.

If you have any Maidstone Area news, please let me know. Email [email protected], text 306-893-7378 or phone 306-893-2799. My deadline is Monday so please send it early.
