A week ago I would have sworn that old Mother Nature had come down with Alzheimer's disease and had forgotten what season she was supposed to be bringing on. As I sit here writing this it was just a week ago today that the winds were blowing snow into our back yard and covering tracks in the driveways within very short order of their creation. To say the least I, along with many others, was not overly impressed with the way the weather had been shaping up. It had seemed that ever since the earthquake and tsunami in Japan we had been inundated with windy, unseasonable conditions.
Today though, I, and of course many others, am quite happy that the temperatures have been rising into the plus areas and the sun has been beaming down to melt away (and here I won't say the four-letter word for all of that white stuff) the solid-state water that we have been looking at since it came early last fall. As I look around town here in Meota many of the streets are now down to mucky bare earth or asphalt and it seems that most folks are happy to have to put on their Polish hush puppies (rubber boots to those of you who are not of Polish extraction as I am) to go out and play in the water and mud. As per usual I, along with many others here, have been taking part in that spring tradition (which often seems to mostly effect the males of our species) of donning the rubber high tops and a shovel and working to try and adjust the path of the melt water that is flowing down the streets and through our yards. Even though I do this every spring I often wonder if Mother Nature is watching and laughing at my feeble attempts to change the order that she has set out but even so I will continue to do so as it is a great pastime that gives me a reason to enjoy the sun and warmth.
As to things to watch for around town in the near future there is a couple to keep in mind. On April 8, there is going to be the Annual General Meeting for the Do Drop In. This will start at ten o'clock. Then, later that evening, will be A.D.R.A.'s monthly movie night. It had to be moved from earlier this month to find an open date to book. The movie being shown this time will be "Secretariat" which is a great show based on the true life of the famous horse of that name. As usual there will be popcorn and drinks supplied. As usual a silver collection is solicited at these movies to help cover costs.
Then, on the eleventh, Meota and District Recreation Association will be holding their annual general meeting. This is open to anyone who would like to have some input or have some questions to ask. At this meeting the executive will be set for the next years as well. As I mentioned in my last article there is a real need for more people to get involved and help keep this organization that has done so much over the years, going. So again I ask that if you have some time and energy drop in at the A.D.R.A. room in the community center on the eleventh at seven in the evening.
On April 15, the hall committee is again putting on a lunch at the community center to offer the opportunity to have a good meal at a very reasonable price while catching up on the scuttlebutt with your neighbours in the community. These have been started to take up the slack that was left by the closing of the school while helping to support the operation of the hall.
In Kaiser Action at the Do Drop In on the seventeenth of March, first place was sewn up by Muriel Tebay while Irene Carlson and Beulah Corbeil tied for second and third, while Ken Tucker tied up fourth place. Then, on the twenty fifth, first place went to Ken Tucker, second was taken by Muriel Tebay, third went to Linda Ard and Beulah Corbeil brought in fourth.
On March 18 the Canasta players went head to head with the winning team of Gwen Lacerte and Jean Gansauge coming out on top.
In duplicate bridge play on March 21, first place went to Jette DaSilva with Eric Callbeck coming in second. Then on March 28 it was Joyce Antoine who tied up first place with Warren Iverson coming in second.
On March 22 in duplicate bridge Swiss teams the winners were Mary Greenwald, Frank Antoine, Robert Iverson and Joyce Antoine. Then, on the twenty ninth in duplicate bridge, first place went to the team of Glenn and Julie Moore with Marnie Davie and Dave Creegan taking second.
