Longtime librarian earns life member award

Borden and Radisson News

Helen Sutherland of Borden was in Regina May 4 at the Saskatchewan Library Trustee Association鈥檚 awards luncheon to receive the SLA honorary life member award.

Helen has been a part of the library since its inception in 1967. A former teacher, farm wife and mother of eight, she was one of the first branch librarians. The first location in Borden was in a vacant machinery dealership and the current location is in the Borden Community Centre. Helen was librarian until 1994 when she retired at the age of 65, but she continued serving the library as a local and regional board member.听

鈥淔or me it has been a wonderful place to meet friends and welcome new people and the books and services do so much for the community of Borden,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am proud of our library and gratified to have been part of the system in a very local way. It has thrived in Borden because of the many people who made it happen, not just one.鈥

After being involved with the Borden Library for more than 50 years, Helen is still one of its most devoted patrons.

The Borden Farmers鈥 Market started the season with its first market May 4 in the Borden Fire Hall. Not all the vendors were on hand but Karen Kerr had jams, jellies, cards and plants. Proctors Honey had a table and Eileen Petrun and Natalie Gramiak had tables laden with baked goodies. The Borden United Church went through more than 100 hamburgers and hot dogs. Parking is somewhat constricted as the fire hall addition is taking shape on the south side. Market patrons cannot park in front of the building or the fire department vehicles. The market hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday until Oct. 5. This is one less hour than last year, as there is not much traffic after 2 p.m.

The Borden Lions met May 1 and donated $500 to STARS in recognition of the Humboldt tragedy and also gave $150 to the Borden beautification committee to plant the flower barrels around Borden.

Upcoming for the Lions is the Mother鈥檚 Day Brunch Sunday, May 13 in the Borden Community Centre from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the men doing the cooking and the ladies helping to clean up. A raffle for a basket of goodies will also be held that day. The club is trying to organize a highway ditch clean up and if the club wishes to be reimbursed the date would be Saturday, May 26.

Other events will be the pancake breakfast June 2 for Diefenbaker Daze, to be held at the community centre rather than on the grounds, and the 2018 grad banquet June 8.

The motorcycle Lions Ride for Guide Dogs will be coming through Borden June 2, stopping at the community centre at 9:30 a.m., when presentations will be made to them. The members have been doing a 鈥渃hase the ace鈥 lottery at the local level for a number of months. Having the winning ticket May 1 was Lorraine Olinyk, receiving $9.75. She then pulled the ace of clubs from the deck of cards to win the jackpot of $220.

Borden Dance Club鈥檚 2018 recital was hosted April 29 at the community centre. MC Lynette Schmidt stated the club has 47 dancers ranging in age from four to 18. The dancers come from Borden, Hafford, Langham, Radisson and Maymont.

Many family and friends were on hand to witness Lucas, Emily, Kasey and godparents gathered around the baptismal font for this special occasion. A family luncheon was held at the bowling alley following the service.

The Borden Care Home Auxiliary held a spring tea at the care home May 1 and many came out to enjoy lunch and beverages. The proceeds from the tea will go to buy flowers to plant outside around the building. The door prize of a potted plant went to Carol Herman.

Retiring from the听auxiliary are Sharon Assman, Julia Bezugly, Jackie Meister and Audrey Barth, leaving only Jean Sawchyn and Audrey Baker to carry on. So if anyone is interested, call Jean Sawchyn.
