Locals support Quilting for Calgary

Thirty quilts were completed and made ready to be taken to Calgary Aug. 19 by a Calgary resident who has spent the summer in Saskatchewan. She will deliver them to "Quilting for Calgary" and they will distribute them to Alberta's flood areas.

Thirty quilts were completed and made ready to be taken to Calgary Aug. 19 by a Calgary resident who has spent the summer in Saskatchewan. She will deliver them to "Quilting for Calgary" and they will distribute them to Alberta's flood areas.

The quilt tops were brought to Sandy Fisher's quilting shop in Maidstone and came from across Canada and even from the United States. Sandy and ladies from Waseca, Maidstone and surrounding area quilted and completed the necessary hand sewing to make the quilts ready by the Sunday deadline. A big thank you to all who worked on this project.

The village was shocked when the sudden death of a resident, Jack Schonofer, was reported. Our condolences to his wife and family on their loss.

A former resident of the Battlevale district south of Waseca, Harry James passed away on Aug. 17, his 91st birthday. Harry was the second of six children born to Hendrik and Cornelia Janus who moved to Battlevale in 1924. Harry took all his schooling at Battelvale. When the Second World War was in progress he joined up in 1941 and served overseas with the signal corps.

Following the war Harry travelled west and did many jobs. By 1950 he had settled in Quesnel, B.C. where he married his wife Lil in 1952. In 1981when he and Lil were both retired they made their home in Vernon, B.C.

Harry leaves his wife of 61 years, his sister, Helena, sisters-in-law Evelyn Janus of Mission B.C., Evelyn Janus of Maidstone and nieces to whom we send out deepest sympathy.
