Meota has become a regular stop on the trail for the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles. For a few years, this organization has been travelling the province early in the New Year to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
This year they will again be travelling the trails starting in Meadow Lake and after eight days on the trail will end the ride in Hudson Bay. This represents a ride of about 2,000 kilometers with numerous stops along the way to attend events where donations will be gathered to add to their total.
This year, our own Debbie Oborowsky has taken up the challenge to join in the ride for a purpose that is very near and dear to her heart. For her it is not only the friends whom she has known and lost to this decimating disease but it has been right close to home in her family. Her mother-in-law is a survivor and at present her mother is battling with cancer.
Each rider who takes part is expected to organize a fundraiser to kick start their fund. Debbie started to work on this and had a conversation with Carole Chapman, who is also a member of the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles. Carole came up with the idea of a fundraising supper and silent auction and Debbie was all for it. The event was in the works, with Carole being instrumental in organizing the evening. Numerous businesses and individuals came through with donations for the silent auction and Anne Baillargeon took charge supper preparation which was run on a cost recovery basis, keeping more in the pot towards the funding of the ride.
Debbie is grateful to all who took part in and helped with the running of the evening and its great success. She tells me that even in the late afternoon of the event there were people dropping off donations for the silent auction. Thanks to all for making this such a success.
Meota Lakeshore Lions are again sponsoring their Christmas decoration contest. For a number of years now they have been operating this to encourage everyone to brighten up our community for the Christmas season. The first place prize winner will receive $100 for their efforts with the second place winner taking home $50 and the third place winner receiving $25. This year the display judging will take place Dec. 22 between seven and nine in the evening. So, if you live here, get busy and get those displays organized and lit up and I suggest you take own Christmas light tour that night and see for yourself the displays that are lit up.
Food is a great part of this blessed season and this year is not to be out done. Wednesday night, the Lions chorus set aside their practice time at the Do Drop In to partake in many different dishes that showed up for a potluck supper. We had a good evening of visiting and filling ourselves until we resembled the stuffed turkey we had enjoyed. Saturday night, another 49 folks gathered for the DDI Christmas supper. The evening was another roaring success as everyone enjoyed another fantastic meal with a good dose of visiting thrown in. They followed this with everyone joining in to sing some Christmas Carols and some more fraternity.
Dec. 2, in kaiser play, first place was taken by Fred Gansauge. There was a tie for second and third between Linda Ard and Irene Carlson and fourth place went to Adele Feschuk.
Dec. 3 was canasta night at the Do Drop In with Bev McCrimmon and Jean Gansauge coming out the winners.
In contract bridge play Dec. 8, Warren Iverson took first place with Robert Iverson coming second. Dec. 9, in duplicate bridge, there was a tie between the teams of Terrence and Jette DaSilva and Robert Iverson and Joyce Antoine.
