Happy Halloween!
I am looking forward to an update from five softball girls who travelled to Palmdale, Cal., with the 222 Fastpitch U16 team and U14 teams. Coached by former Team Canada men's players, Keith McIntosh and Dean Holhein, these girls will be playing competitive softball throughout the winter. Players for U16 are Marina Gampe and Samantha David. The U14 girls from here are MacKenna Vany, Morgan Mock and Josey Huber.
St. Peter's Parish annual fall supper will be held Nov. 2 with tickets available at St. Peter's Gift Shop or Wildeman Sports. These are long-standing traditions in our communities and can only operate with the hands-on help of many volunteers and those people who support their efforts. It's a great price for a home cooked meal you can enjoy with your friends and neighbours. Don't miss out on this opportunity.
If you love to shop in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with some unique merchandise come to Ladies Night Out 2014, Nov. 1. Admission is $5 with a portion of the proceeds going to the Unity Community Resource Centre in memory of Shirley Parkinson.
St. Peter's School sent the boys' volleyball team to a tournament at UCHS. This was a great experience for the kids and they had a ton of fun competing in an event like this although, after four straight games, they appeared a little tired out.
Mr. Volk is looking forward to some afternoon fun with the kids this Halloween as they incorporate their costumes and some activity for the kids this Hallow's Eve. You can check out all the latest photos and what's happening at the school on the new St. Peter's Facebook page.
Unity Public School also sent a boys' team to the junior volleyball tournament at UCHS. Mr. Jedlicka was all smiles as the opening game had them winning one set against the Grade 7 UCHS team. This energized UPS for the remainder of their three games and they came in in fourth place, advancing them to the first round of playoffs. They were exciting to watch as both kids and coach were successful because they were genuinely having fun and enjoying the experience.
Halloween will be evident in the UPS hallways as the tradition of a costume parade and games as well as classroom activities will be taking place.
UCHS has so much on the go. Students are out and about with the annual fruit sale fundraiser. This product comes from DeSimone Farms in B.C. and has always been popular with the public. You can contact any UCHS student or the school if you want to make sure you don't miss out on this sale. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to support a number of extracurricular activities and events at UCHS.
Report cards are out and the student-led conferences will be held next week, Nov. 4 and 5; this is a new version of parent/teacher interviews that involves the students. There will be no school Nov. 11 due to Remembrance Day, nor on Nov. 24 due to a professional development day.
Junior girls' volleyball will host conference playoffs Nov. 1 and the top four teams from this event will advance to district finals Nov. 6. Senior girls' volleyball will compete at regional playoffs Nov. 14-15 in Biggar where they hope to secure a berth to provincials coming in LaLoche. Junior boys travel to Wilkie for conference playoffs Nov. 1 and anticipate securing a berth to the district championships Nov. 6 at NBCHS.

Coffee row is certainly discussing the downward spiral of our beloved Riders. When three quarters in Calgary looked like we were clear to win, everything went south and once again we are lamenting our hopes for the upcoming playoffs. The weather is never too far off the table either as, after enjoying a pleasant fall, the winter word creeps back into the conversation.
There is nothing better in a small community than walking into a place and hearing the stories and laughter that come from our folks on coffee row. Keep it up, folks; those around you enjoy your daily gatherings as much as you do! So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
