The Borden Lions are holding a book drive of new and good quality used books and magazines for children and adults for the new Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon. You may give your contributions to any Borden Lions member or drop them off at the Affinity Credit Union by March 28.
The Borden Friendship Club held their annual Valentine's Tea for Telemiracle, Feb. 14, with 47 out to enjoy strawberry shortcake with their beverages. A child's wagon that had been used to store tables on was sold by silent auction to Rita Smith. Donated at the door was $289.60. The 50/50 of $54 went to Ivan Youchezin. A total of $343.60 will be sent in to Telemiracle, thanks to everyone who attended and donated so generously.
Door prizes donated by members went to thirteen locals and Ida Muller and Phyliss Domashovitz from Radisson and Gladys Wensley and Dave Wallace from Saskatoon.
The Borden Lions and the Borden High School held a luncheon Feb. 12 in the Borden Community Centre, with the Grade 11 and 12 students doing the work of cashiers, serving the turkey noodle soup and bunwitches, along with beverages, and cleaning up. The day was kind of cold and snowy so there was not a real good attendance, but they hope to have another joint luncheon in the future.
Condolences are extended to the families of Loverna Hiebert, 85 years of age, who passed away Feb. 7 - Don and Claudia Dyck and Wendell and Judy Dyck of Borden, and their families. Loverna's memorial service was held Feb. 15 in the Borden Community Centre with Tony Martens officiating. Ruby Wall played the piano and the Mennonite Fellowship Church provided the lunch.
Condolences also to Carol, Brian and Michael Crabb and relatives from Borden and Radisson, on the passing of Curtis Crabb at the age of 54 from brain cancer Feb. 11. The memorial service was held at Borden Community Centre Feb. 18 with Gayle Wensley officiating, Linda Hosegood and Lorraine Olinyk playing the piano and the United Church providing the lunch.
Borden School both celebrated 100 days of school and held their Scholastic Book Fair Feb. 11 in the school gym. Kindergarten and Grade 1 wore 100th hats and sang about being in school 100 days. The Grade 2, 3 and 4 class included action in telling the audience about their favorite Robert Munch book - Mortimer. The Grade 5 and 6 class did their own rap about books. Entertaining before and after the program was Avery Fairbrother playing guitar and singing.
Librarian Linda Yuskiw said the library had been shut down since October with renovations but was now up and running. She introduced her library club with their Dr. Seuss hats; they look after the little kids while parents shop for books.
The students are in a contest, Read Across Canada, reading books from every province.
Instead of a draw for a student to win books for their classroom, each student from K - Grade 6 received a $1.50 coupon to be used towards purchases.
The Radisson Order of the Royal Purple No. 347 poster contest for Borden and Maymont schools had 100 entries from students in kindergarten to Grade 9. The posters were judged Feb. 3, and now the 12 top posters - three in each category, beginner, primary, junior and intermediate - will be taken into Saskatoon where the Saskatchewan Elks and Royal Purple will judge them along with other entries from Saskatchewan schools. Prize money will be awarded.
The Radisson RP will be going to the schools after the break and awarding the students with the winning posters locally a small cash prize for each grade. Everyone will get a certificate and Smarties.
