Library offers summer fun for children

Whether you're still in a classroom counting the days that are left or already have completed the school year, everyone's ready for summer.

Whether you're still in a classroom counting the days that are left or already have completed the school year, everyone's ready for summer. This year, the Blaine Lake Wapiti Public Library is more than prepared to keep everyone busy and entertained with two exciting children's programs - the summer reading club and the CIF funded program called the KidsSpace Club.

These programs will focus on maintaining a child's literacy during the months of July and August. There's lots of research showing kids can lose a significant amount of their literacy skills over the holidays and programs like these can play a role in achieving the goal of keeping children reading during the summer. These programs are both free, and are open to anyone. If you live nearby, or are holidaying at a local resort, you are welcome to join the fun.

The KidsSpace Club offers two fantastic afternoons a week of stories, games and crafts at the library. The program is open to children ages four to 11. Children will also be encouraged to sign up for the Go! TD Summer Reading Club. You are encouraged to pre-register, but library staff will be happy to make room for drop-ins too.

The TD Summer Reading Club is a free program offered at Canadian public libraries and strives to engage all children in the joy of reading during the summer months. Participants receive a passport and booklet when they register, which they can use to record their summer reading. When they report their reading log to library staff, they will earn stickers, prizes and more. Each time they finish reading a book, they can go online and enter their code for a chance to win one of the fantastic prizes supplied by Wapiti Regional Library.

Prizes this year include an iPad 2, iPod touch, portable DVD player, Kobo touch e-reader plus eight $25 gift cards. Children aged three to 12 can participate in the summer reading program at any Wapiti Regional Library from June 26 to Aug. 31.

Blaine Lake library will celebrate with Sunday in the Park, Aug. 19. There will be live entertainment, the Balloon Funn man with his magical balloons, face painting and, of course, old-fashioned barbecued burgers and hot dogs will be for sale. Be sure to mark your calendar and attend this fun family day on the Blaine Lake library grounds.

For more information, you can visit the Facebook page, see posters or contact the library at 306-497-3031 during library hours of 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays.
