Let your imagination free. Join the 2012 TD Summer Reading Club
Children look forward to the end of school. No more teachers, no more books. But wait! Children should still think about books over the summer. School-age children can lose many of their reading skills over the summer months if they do not continue to read while they are out of school. Reading keeps their comprehension skills sharp throughout the summer.
The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada's largest reading club. It is an annual reading incentive program for children. The goals of the club are to encourage and strengthen the habit of reading for pleasure, to create life-long learners, to improve children's reading skills and reduce summer learning loss.
Saskatchewan libraries have been involved with the TD Summer Reading Club since 2005. Lakeland Library Region branches all participate in the club.
The TD Summer Reading Club theme for 2012 is Imagine. Anything can happen when children let their imagination take over. They can imagine being a pirate on a sailing ship or travelling back or forward in time. They can imagine a world with dragons and other mythical creatures. And they can imagine being an astronaut or an airline pilot, or a librarian. These are just a few of the awesome possibilities this summer will offer. Children in the club will be encouraged to read whatever and whenever they would like, and by reading, they can become whoever they want and they can go wherever they want.
Registering for TD Summer Reading Club is free and easy. Visit any public library in your area to find out when and how to register. Participants in the club receive a reading kit containing a colour poster, sticker sheet and an activity book with a logbook to keep track of their progress. To encourage participation, many local libraries will offer reading games, challenges and discussions, book-related crafts and special events.
With a focus on children ages four to 12, participating libraries offer a range of books for all reading levels that fit into the fantasy theme as well as any genre children like to read. Libraries always hope to surpass the number of books read the previous summer.
The TD Summer Reading Club is made possible for all public libraries across Canada thanks to the joint initiative between TD Bank Financial Group, Library and Archives Canada and the Toronto Public Library.
