Learning fair next week at Borden School

Borden School is holding a learning fair April 15, with free dessert at 6 p.m. in the gym and a program and presentation of the provincial poster contest winners by Radisson Royal Purple.

Then parents of K-6 students will go to school rooms to learn about some of the ongoing and new initiatives taking place at the school, interacting with their children and teacher. High school parents will remain in the gym for information on course selections, SWEEP and the Da Vinci program in Langham.

There will be childcare for ages 3 to Grade 1, supervised craft time for Grade 2- 4 students and computer time for Grade 5 - 6 students.

The school welcomes Carol Crabb back after an extended leave, and says farewell to Deb Matte who replaced her for those months.

The school library has a reading challenge for March and April. The challenge is to read as many books as possible by different authors. In March, 940 books were read and recorded.

Badminton playoffs are this week with juniors playing April 7, 10 and 12 and the seniors playing April 14 and 16. There will be two track and field clinics put on by Sask Athletics with the first one April 15 from 3 - 6 p.m. and the second one at the same times May 6.

The Borden School Community Council has only three members and, if more are not found by the annual meeting May 5, then it may cease to function. A minimum of five are needed.

Earth Day will be observed April 22, which is when people are asked to recycle, reuse, exercise, buy recycled paper and to try to not waste.

Affinity Credit Union held their annual meeting April 2 at 10 different locations and webcast from Saskatoon with the reports.

At Langham there were 54 present to enjoy a variety of appetizers and dainties before the meeting. Evelyn Kasahoff of Langham represents District 7 on the 2014-15 board of directors. There are nine delegates from the six locations in District 7.

Reports were heard from CEO Mark Lane, board president Scott Flavel and chief financial officer Lise de Moissac. Affinity has $4.7 billion in assets, 965 employees, 130,000 members serving 68 communities, 22 board directors and 105 district council delegates. As of Jan. 1, 2015, Hudson Bay and Shaunavon Credit Unions will be joining Affinity. Affinity CU became the seventh largest credit union in Canada when Advantage and Spectra joined in 2013.

Affinity has $3.3 billion in member loans, $3.6 billion in total member deposits and gave out $1.9 million in donations, sponsorships and grants.

Affinity was among the first in Canada to introduce Deposit Anywhere, using smartphones. Since launching in June, 2013, 16,000 members have used it for a total of $30 million, averaging 70 users a day for $150,000 a day.

Winning door prizes at Langham were Don Milne and Bev Turgeon; $50 bills went to Joe Kasahoff, Sela Balzer, Bob Izaac and Doyle Wiebe.

Upcoming at Borden are the Borden Friendship Club Kaiser tournament April 8, annual meeting April 9, spring tea and bake sale April 15 and arranging a casino bus April 17, departing from Borden Hall at 11 a.m. The singalong choir group meets every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. In motion exercise classes for anyone, free of charge, are Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in the seniors' room. The potluck supper and program will be April 30.

The Borden Farmers' Market annual meeting is April 16 at 7 p.m. at the home of Eileen Petrun. The first market is tentatively set for May 2 at 11 a.m. in the Borden Fire Hall.
