Lazy days of summer are gone, hustle and bustle of fall upon us

Today marks a sombre event in history as we remember those who were affected by terrorist attacks of 9-11. Be thankful folks we can continue to live in a peaceful country and please remember important issues like this when making your decision on voting in the upcoming federal election.

While attending the funeral in North Battleford for an long time family friend, I was flattered (except for you Wally LOL) on all the compliments I heard regarding this column, so that leads me to believe you are interested in reading the happenings in Unity,you like to read all kinds of things in this paper or you want to really see if I will stand by the Riders no matter what! Thank you everyone, I appreciate the positive feedback and it is certainly one of the reasons I 鈥渒eep on, keeping it on.鈥

The lazy days of summer are now over and the hustle and bustle of a busy fall is upon us as all activities are now back into full swing including school, as well as those farmers working hard to bring in the harvest. Please keep in mind the safety of yourselves, your families and others when hurrying and scurrying around to the multiple tasks that are on your 鈥渢o do鈥 list each day. It takes only a moment of hurried distraction for an accident to happen.

Unity Public School has welcomed several new teachers to replace retirees and maternity leaves. Welcome back breakfast has been held, students have now adjusted to opening week jitters and the school term is well underway with a number of returning activities in the works such as cross-country, soccer, choir and participating in the annual Terry Fox Walk, marking the 35th anniversary of this event this year. Enrolment at UPS is up again this year keeping time and space management at UPS a priority.

St. Peter鈥檚 school also has some new faces in their hallways including their 24 new kindergarten students and some new staff on board. St. Peter鈥檚 school is also well into their fall activities that include cross-country running, soccer, choir and band as well as the Terry Fox Walk. It will not be long before we can once again hear the beautiful music that the St. Peter鈥檚 students offer in the community, at school events and in church.

We all know Unity Composite High School hits the ground running. More students came in the doors as Grade 7s than exited the doors as graduates, so the hallways are very full. Volleyball season is already underway and welcome plans are in the works for the Sept. 20 week. Warrior football is back in action, too, and the team welcomes fans to come cheer them on during their season. SADD has begun again and students look forward to those famous taco salad days as part of the SADD fundraising efforts for the programs they offer. UCHS is also committed to the annual Terry Fox walk as part of their wellness programs.

The annual Candace Heitt memorial run at the golf course Sept. 20. This annual memorial run benefits the Candace Heitt bursary given at the high school as well as contributing to the paving paths in Unity. You can register for the half marathon, three-person relay, 10K run or 5K run. You could also call the golf course for more details on this event.

Because of the field upgrades, there will be sadly no Unity Minor Football Day this year, however minor football is in full swing and folks can head to east fields of the high school or the public school grounds and watch the next rising football stars as they host home games during their season, which runs to early October in both tackle and flag divisions.

While we are discussing hockey season, a big congratulations to UMH player who hails from Luseland, Ryan Koenig, who was part of the Team Canada cowboys 2015 AAA European hockey tour this summer. Ryan was given glowing recommendations from his hockey coaches. There were threeNorth American teams and five European teams in this event with the Canadian Cowboys earning bronze. Ryan will return to the Unity Minor Hockey program this winter goal tending for the midget division.

Don鈥檛 forget to register for 3 on 3 hockey that will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 10 with registration only $50. Contact UMH president, Dan Feser at 306-228-8123 to register. Minor hockey registration has taken place this week with numbers again high, ensuring multiple teams in various divisions. Be sure to watch the electronic town sign, local bulletin boards and social media for updates on the many registrations that will be taking place this fall.

Buy your tickets early for the 18th annual 鈥渄ance for the health of it鈥 event being held Oct. 17 at the community centre. This event always sells out early. Contact Peter at 306-228-3847 for tickets or more information.

Do you have some garden produce that is itching to take centre stage? Or you have a remarkable sewing or quilting project that deserves to be on display? Or you have some photography skills that others love to view (as one of the more popular categories in the annual fall fair). It is just a few weeks before the annual Unity Fall Fair and Trade Show Spet. 25 and 26. Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op are partnering to host the Saturday morning pancake breakfast with proceeds earmarked to the new Unity Community Daycare project. Ito book a vendor table, please contact any member of the Ag Society or contact the town office at 306-228-2621. Fall fair booklets are out for those wanting to enter their home grown and home made goods for this portion of the event.

You don鈥檛 want to forget to get your name in to be on the home team playing the Montreal Canadiens alumni hockey team featuring plenty of former NHLers.There are also spots open for officiating the big game, equipment handlers and security for the Habs alumni as well as a 鈥淭hrill of a Lifetime鈥 experience that includes a jersey, playing with the alumni and plenty more excitement to boot. Oct. 1, the minor hockey draft night, will be an opportunity to be selected for these opportunities. Coffee row folks 鈥 what else was there to talk about other than the Sept. 1 shakeup of relieving Coach Chamblin and GM Taman of their duties, as well as sacking Sunseri one more time. And the always popular Labor Day Classic. Will this be the turnaround Rider fans are hoping for?聽 Harvest happenings are a continual discussion topic as being surrounded by agriculture it鈥檚 a big part of the community culture and economic activity. There is no lack of upcoming activities to review or anticipate as you can see by the lists in this column. So you keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
