Members of the Lashburn High School leadership class have undertaken several initiatives to help those less fortunate.

We the student leadership class of Lashburn High School are fundraising and promoting awareness during this holiday season.

Without being asked, our students stepped up to donate 16 shoe boxes of items that will bring joy to children who are less fortunate than us. We are also thinking globally to support Free the Children and their campaigns for sustainable development.

We have started a penny war for the Free the Children We Create Change campaign, that provides clean water to people who don't have access to it. Every $25 gives one person clean water for life. We've been fundraising for under a week and already have enough money for more than five people to have water for life, and we still have two weeks to go.

We chose this campaign because the women in impoverished countries don't have access to school, because they have too many chores to do, which involve walking for hours to get water. Once they get water they have to choose what to do with it. They either have to cook, clean, drink or bathe with that water. Then they have to repeat this process every day; therefore they don't have the chance to get an education.

We never realize how much $25 is to some people. That the $100 pair of shoes you're wearing is four peoples' life supply of water. That $75 game you bought for your entertainment could have given three people water for life. These are just some of the things on our mind as we enter this season of giving. We wanted to make sure that, while we enjoy our feasts and gifts, we remember to give back to someone less fortunate as well.
