Kraft Canada offering new opportunities to replace Hockeyville

The end of November means the end of Movember. For many wives and girlfriends this is indeed a celebratory moment.

The end of November means the end of Movember. For many wives and girlfriends this is indeed a celebratory moment. But kudos to all the folks, both male and female, who took part in this awesome and fun campaign to raise money and awareness of cancer, particularly male-dominated cancers.

And what a heartwarming gesture by Kraft Canada. They are "bucking" up for communities across Canada with a million dollar offering for 24 different communities to win. Instead of just cancelling their Hockeyville campaign and leaving it at that, they decided to institute the pay it forward concept and are asking for nominations of dedicated community volunteers. Winners can earn up to 24 different dollar amounts for their hockey programs. Way to go, Kraft Canada, for renewing our faith in big business and for teaching others that giving back is an important concept in today's world.

You can check out all the details on the Kraft Canada website or the "Hockey goes on" Facebook page. This is one thing the current, ridiculous NHL lockout has bred - initiative for others to move on positively in spite of the NHL players' and owners' selfishness.

Also, once again kudos to the students of UCHS. Not only did they run a month-long campaign in October to raise money for cancer as well as awareness, they dedicated the whole month of November to Movemeber fundraising, awareness and fun. In addition, their Halloween collection for the food bank raised over 600 pounds of food. And it doesn't stop there. The local SADD group also held a taco salad sale and, if purchasers brought a food bank item, they earned $1 off of their purchase. This group of kids continues to pay it forward to the community they live in.

Now that volleyball season is officially over, the basketball court has begun action in all divisions. UCHS drama club is in high gear with only a couple of weeks to go until their productions are presented Dec. 11 and 12.

Unity Public volleyball kids were enjoying some practices and matches were slated in Wilkie for both boys and girls Nov. 29. As well, the Halloween after school craft club was a hit so we will soon be seeing details on a Christmas project. The hallways of UPS are coming alive with the sights of Christmas.

The NHL (No more Hockey League) is still playing the childish game of who blinks first. Never mind them; the arena is alive with hockey action on a regular basis. The Midget A team sits with an undefeated record so far. Whether you like the fast paced action of the older divisions or the joyful sights and sounds of kids in the early divisions, come down to the rink and enjoy live hockey action, where you can also visit a neighbour or have a bite to eat as you enjoy the aroma of rink burgers wafting through the lobby. Might I add, Daymon's rink burger recipe is a delicious one - you might want to try it out.

Coming up soon at the curling rink is the Sask Curling Tour event Dec. 14-16, sure to bring out a team or two you have heard of, and guaranteed to bring a lot of great live curling action to our community. Although the first bonspiel of the year was cancelled, there are still plenty of live action at the curling rink Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Senior leagues run Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Junior curling is Monday evenings. And high school curling teams are now practising for their season, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

Coming up is a Christmas sale, Dec. 8 at the Anglican hall in Unity from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The sale will include decorations, gifts, holiday baking and Tupperware. To book a table for only $10 contact Val at 228-4536.

Coffee row folks have declared football season officially over with the 100th Grey Cup engaging fans in excitement all last week and weekend. Local hockey action and curling results are often mulled over. The weather always enters the conversation. And now that December is upon us this weekend, the subject of Christmas and all that subject entails will be reviewed on occasion. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
