Don't miss Land Marks, the current exhibition of work by Dorothy Knowles on now at the Chapel Gallery. Knowles began studying art in the late 1940s and early '50s at night school and summer school. She was part of a group of Saskatchewan artists who were exploring new ways to paint the Canadian prairies.
She was encouraged to paint from nature by well-known New York critic Clement Greenberg, even though abstraction was a popular art form at the time. She has been a prolific painter and her work hangs in galleries and private collections around the world.
The Land Marks exhibition includes watercolours, acrylics and oils that portray settings in the Western Canadian landscape. The paintings span a number of years and show her growth as an artist and the depth and definition of each landscape. She paints outdoors when weather permits and uses colour slides for studio work. The Chapel Gallery is proud to have the opportunity to host this exhibition by one of Canada's most important artists.
