June packed with activities

It's almost mid-June and the month traditionally known for being one of the busiest, next to September and December, shows no sign of slowing down.

The rain came down in earnest June 3, overtaxing the town of Unity's storm drainage system.

It's almost mid-June and the month traditionally known for being one of the busiest, next to September and December, shows no sign of slowing down. June is full of activity as sporting events heat up in their competition for various titles, brides finish planning their weddings, grad preparations are made, the pool is open and school is winding down.

Let's hope June is full of fabulous weather to make up for the cool stuff we experienced late into our spring.

June 3 certainly gave us some fast and furious moisture in the form of intense rain, thunder, lightning and even some small hail showers. Storm drains were quickly overwhelmed and mini-lakes formed on many streets. Everyone wonders if this is a prelude for summer weather or what we might expect for summer 2014?

Unity keeps trying to earn a top spot in the Kraft-TSN Celebration Tour. You can view our bid on their website and we will be keeping our eyes glued to the TSN broadcast July 1 to see if we earned a top 10 spot. Voting will begin July 21 with the hopeful outcome of not only a cash prize for the project nominated but a visit by the TSN on-air crew.

We would like to welcome our newest doctor to our community. Dr. Dhillon arrived in early May and began serving Unity as a doctor. She has a daughter attending the University of Lethbridge and will be joined by her son, who will become a student at UCHS.

At Unity Composite High the track team competed at provincial track this past weekend in Moose Jaw. Please see results in the sports section of this paper. This ends sports season at UCHS and now staff and students will be preparing for graduation June 27 and soon-to-be final exams starting mid-June.

The grad church service was held May 29 with a fabulous turnout and wonderful program. Next up for students was the annual UCHS awards night June 10 at the high school honouring exceptional students in academics, athletics and arts and culture, as well as leadership and citizenship. Invitations were received by students being recognized at the Living Sky School Division Hall of Honour awards program also in June.

It's a busy month and I know retiring principal Mrs. Robertson as well as Grade 12 students and parents are finding the time just flying by to the close of this school year.

At Unity Public School, schedules are fully booked. In between preparing for exams, report cards and finishing off units of study, the Grade 3 and 5 classes will hold their field trips June 13. Pre-K celebration day is June 18 and the kindergartens will have their celebration days June 23 and 24. Grade 6s are winding up their elementary years as they prepare for a big overnighter field trip June 23 and 24, followed by their Grade 6 celebration day. The last day for students will be June 25, with report cards given out June 27.

St. Peter's School is also a very busy place. In addition to finishing up study units, teachers are preparing for exams, report cards and the departure of not only their Grade 6 class but also Principal Dan Wilgenbusch. Class field trips have begun and will continue into next week. It is amazing how fast a year has gone.

The ball diamonds continue to be the busiest place in town as not only are folks awaiting the arrival of mamma duck's seven ducklings from the eggs she has been sitting on, but the ball game action is nonstop. Whether you like to watch Cardinals' baseball, the bantam and midget softball teams playing in the Battlefords Ladies' Fastball League or you come to cheer on your favourite littlest star in other divisions, there is no lack of ball action at the diamonds. Even though not part of minor ball, last year's provincial winning Junior Ladies U.K. Royals are also part of the softball season. And slo-pitch happens each Friday night. Plenty to watch and all the action is free; come and watch a game or two.

Swimming lessons are in full swing. You can enjoy public swimming each night from 7 - 8:30 p.m. as well as each weekend afternoon and evening. Come pick up a pool schedule so you know what time swimming is.

Coffee row was discussing the big storm June 3 as well as predicting summer weather. The folks at these tables also review Senior Cardinals' baseball, minor ball baseball and softball, ladies fastball and/or the Friday night slo-pitch games. And, as it looms closer, Rider season is a topic on the table, crossing fingers that this silly labour dispute will fizzle out. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
