The Battlefords Jazz Society has an event planned for Friday, May 2 at the Sloan Auditorium that will feature popular Saskatoon-based band Rosie and the Riveters.

Since the Second World War, Rosie the Riveter has been immortalized as a symbol of the strength and power that is inside every woman, and the four women who make up Rosie and the Riveters have embraced Rosie, the fashion and music of her time.

They are billed as offering a compelling performance hosting seductive vocal arrangements, percussion, acoustic instrumentation, scintillating choreography, inviting humour and a whole lot of charm.

Their show consists of traditional African American spirituals, bluegrass numbers, contemporary folk songs, a capella, and original material.

"This ain't your wailin' and weapin' gospel hour!" says the group.

They steer clear from religious conversions and are more likely to have their audiences dancing in the aisles and laughing in their seats.

The Riveters strive to convey uplifting messages that speak to the strength of community and how the power of collaboration can make positive change in the world. As a testament to this, the band donates 20 per cent of their merchandise sales to microfinancing initiatives to fund women's projects around the world via Kiva.org.

Since its formation in 2011, the Saskatoon-based band has performed many concerts including Juno Fest, the Regina Folk Festival, Ness Creek Music Festival, Summer Solstice Festival and the Northern Lights Bluegrass Festival, sharing stages with Arlo Guthrie, Serena Ryder and Emmy-Lou Harris.

Rosie and the Riveters are Alexis Normand, Farideh, Melissa Nygren and Allyson Reigh.

Opening the show will be Raven She Hollers. This trio has been performing in and around the Battlefords for a few years and is getting rave reviews. The trio hails from the Medstead area and showcases a unique blend of blues-inspired folk.

The doors open at 8:30 p.m. with the show at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members, available at Bee'J's, Nufloors and from Jazz Society directors.
