HUMBOLDT — Megan Brooks didn’t know what to expect from her Telemiracle audition.

But the 16-year-old Humboldt girl obviously did well since she will be performing on this year’s annual Saskatchewan telethon.

Brooks taught herself how to play ukulele and took professional voice lessons with Rita Frank, falling in love with singing and music early in her life.

While it is still quite nerve-wracking for her to perform in front of an audience, she said, getting into the groove on stage makes everything better.

“Once you’re in the moment, it’s so much fun.”

Brooks said she hopes Telemiracle will be another opportunity for her to get comfortable on stage, especially since this will also be Brooks’ first time on television.

Since Brooks is also a Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) student, she will be taking totals from HCI fundraisers, including a silent auction in February, as well as starting a webpage to accept donations.

With Nutrien matching donations made to Saskatchewan performers up to $1,500, Brooks said she is excited to get fundraising.

Growing up in Saskatchewan, Telemiracle was always a good cause to look forward to and something you saved your money for, she said.

“It’s fun to do something that you know means something to people.”

Brooks will be performing A Beautiful Thing by Grace VanderWaal on her ukulele during the March 7 and 8 telethon, this year being broadcast from Regina.
