HUMBOLDT — The grand prize winner of the Humboldt Broncos’ Lottery of Cash has plans on how to use his winnings.
“I’m definitely going to pay off some debt and then we’re going to get married,” said Palmer Talloden, standing beside his fiancée Karla. “She actually won an Alaskan cruise last year, so we’re going to go on a cruise and get married and that’s our plans for this year.”
Talloden, who’s from Naicam, won $100,000 from the lottery, which is one of the Broncos’ largest fundraisers.
The winner said when he got the phone call that told him he’d won, he thought it wasn’t real.
“You automatically think: who’s phoning me from Humboldt and is this a joke?” he said. “It’s something that you think’s not going to happen, but, sometimes the odds are for you and you’re just lucky.”
Peggy Standish of Kelvington won the 50/50 prize of $43,440. She said she couldn’t believe it when she heard the news.
“I thought I was going to faint,” she said. “I asked the poor fellow three times if it was a bad joke or a hoax and he finally convinced me it was true.”
Standish also has plans for money.
“My husband wants to update his half-ton, so that and just enjoy the rest.”
Both winners said they’ve supported the Broncos for years and felt it was important to buy a ticket, especially with the year the team has had.
