Invitations to centennial finalized

With 2011 now well underway, the Waseca Centennial Committee is working hard planning the celebration that takes place July 2 and 3. At a regular monthly meeting Jan 5, work continued on the invitations. Saturday, Jan.

With 2011 now well underway, the Waseca Centennial Committee is working hard planning the celebration that takes place July 2 and 3. At a regular monthly meeting Jan 5, work continued on the invitations. Saturday, Jan. 15 the group will meet at the community centre to complete those invitations.

Anyone interested in working with the committee is invited to lend a hand and also attend the monthly meetings.

Wellness clinics continue in the New Year with the first clinic of 2011 being held Thursday, Jan. 20 at 9 a.m.

The Waseca Quilters, who meet the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m., welcome all who wish to join the group. The quilters are now planning a quilt to be raffled. The draw for it will be made at the Waseca centennial July 2 and 3. Proceeds will go to a community cause and also help to fund the centennial celebrations.

Dec. 31, José and Chrystal (Hult) Mandez and children, Victor and Santiago, returned from a couple of weeks spent in Uruguay. Most of their time was spent at the home of José's parents at Paso de la Piedras. They were able to see most of José's family, spending Christmas Day at a family gathering at the home of José's aunt. Christmas Day there is a family holiday with a noon meal that features barbecued pork, lamb or beef.

With temperatures constantly at 35 C, time at the beach is in the evening. The beaches were nearby as was the river where Victor and Santiago enjoyed fishing.

While there, José and Chrystal enjoyed a three-day trip touring different parts of the country.

The weather was dry throughout the time they spent in Uruguay, so that they feared drought. Fortunately some of the farmers have irrigation equipment.

The trip to Uruguay takes about 38 hours in all. It entails four flight changes and lots of wait time.
