The combines are in the fields, the leaves are changing colour and campers are put away. This can only mean one thing: Maymont Central School students and staff are back.
Staff officially went back to work Aug. 27 and miss Heather Cardin as she begins her year at Hafford School. They are pleased to have Chase Fouhy and Laura Webber interning until Christmas. Chase will be working with Ryan Nickell and Laura will be working directly with Jean Anne Jackson.
The enrolment this year is 135. The school welcomed six new students: Elliott Perehudoff in Grade 1, Brooklyn Large in Grade 2, Dakota Shuh in Grade 3, Jakob Kemplay in Grade 4, Sam Kemplay in Grade 6 and Sarah Davidson in Grade 11. The school is also happy to announce Kaleb Nelson has returned in Grade 6.
The new kindergarten class arrived Sept. 4. They were so eager and excited for their first day of school. There are nine kindergarten students this year: Kyler Domak, Olivia Dzialo, Emma Harder, Arthur Krekoski, Carter McIntosh, Jared Meena, Nicholas Nelson, Joanna Usselman and Madison Welford.
Fall sports are in full swing. The junior girls' volleyball team will be coached by Mrs. Krista Gray and Cathy Gillatt. The senior girls' team will be coached by Kandice Walker. They will be having a tournament at the school Nov. 1. There will not be any boys' volleyball teams this year.
There will be a boys' soccer team, coached by Ryan Nickell and Chase Fouhy. They play their first game this week against Poundmaker. The girls' soccer team will be coached by Roxanne Jordan.
Our Student Leadership Council, known as the SLC, has planned many activities to welcome the staff and students back to school.
The SLC president this year is Carlee Hamilton. The vice-presidents are Patience Brown and Cassidy Serhienko. Meghan Brehon will be the secretary and Sean Brehon will serve as the treasurer. Arielle Hamp is the advertising director and Darby Milman is this year's spirit director. Representatives for elementary, middle years and high school will be Tia Montgrand, Janna Ferris and Connor Garrett. Mrs. Susan Thompson is the SLC advisor.
The MCS welcome back breakfast was held Sept. 9. Everyone was treated to fresh fruit and muffins.
Dress-up days and activities will be held the week of Sept. 15 to 19.
Elementary house leagues teams have been organized. The Grade 5 students serve as team captains. The first sport will be soccer.
