HUMBOLDT — Having be the first called up in the Humboldt Legion’s chase the ace draw, Joyce Szautner was guaranteed to win a share 20 per cent of the evening’s earnings – $1,075.
Then she drew the ace of spades, winning the jackpot of $10,069.
“I thought it was the joker,” she said. “I thought, ‘what the heck is a joker doing in here?’ Then I looked at it again. I thought, ‘holy shoot, I think I just won.’”
March 30 was the last evening of the chase the ace, which serves as a fundraiser for the local Legion.
Szautner has plans for the money she won.
“My son is getting married and I get to pay for his wedding,” she said, adding the winnings will also be handy because her husband had surgery and is off work.
Szautner said Humboldt residents should support the Legion.
“It's a great place. I'm going to donate $500 back to the Legion,” she said. “Just come out and support them. It's a wonderful place and and they need help.”
