HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Kinettes are celebrating a special anniversary this year with Kinsmen and Kinettes across the country.
Members of Kinettes and Kinsmen clubs across Canada will be performing a sunrise flag-raising ceremony on Feb. 20 to celebrate 100 years of Kin Canada, and the Humboldt Kinettes chapter will be joining in the celebration.
The flag will be raised at 8:12 a.m. with muffins and coffee available for everyone who attends.
The City of Humboldt will also proclaim Feb. 16 to 22 as Kins Club week to honour the work that has been done across the community.
Susan Braun, the Humboldt and District Kinettes’ secretary, said the goal for Kin Canada is to have videos of chapters across the country raising their flag which will be turned into a video montage of celebration.
The Humboldt Kinettes officially formed with their first executive meeting on Jan. 14, 1987 and an official celebration installed their first 20 members on Jan. 31. According to a previous Humboldt Journal article, Kinsmen and Kinettes across the province attended the celebration to support the newly formed service group.
“Since then, dozens of women have served their community over the years as Kinettes,” Braun said, with many years of Christmas Cheer campaigns, helping out at Telemiracle, and providing 32 years of babysitting courses for young people.
Funds raised have gone to numerous community projects across the city, including St. Mary’s Villa, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Water Ridge Spray Park, Futuristic Industries, and, of course, to Telemiracle, Braun said.
Turning 33 years young is something to be proud of, Braun said, even though numbers have dropped over the years. Right now, the club has four members but will enthusiastically welcome anyone who would like to “serve our community’s greatest needs,” she said.
Braun loves the camaraderie of the women in the group as they unite under a common goal.
The present-day Kinettes would like to thank the many years of Kinsmen and Kinette volunteers who put in the time, energy, and hard work to serve their community, Braun said.
“Their accomplishments are a big deal, and they deserve a round of applause.”
The Humboldt Kinettes were formed with Donna Forer as president, Dorothy Karst as vice-president, Joyce Perras as treasurer, Edna Labrecque and Linda Kolbeck as bulletin editor and co-editor, and Bonnie Dust and Linda Ringrose as directors.
