Holidays extended for students due to extreme cold

Our first day back was a bitterly cold day, so the buses were not able to bring the students to school. I am sure they were disappointed to have an extra day of Christmas vacation!

The staff was at work changing bulletin boards, preparing units of work for the next semester, cleaning book boxes, preparing the timetable and many other things. It was great to have the students arrive back the next day.

Several students attended the hockey game between the Saskatoon Blades and the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Saskatoon. Carter Amson plays with the Lethbridge Hurricanes but was not able to play that night because of an injury.

Our basketball team has been practising after school and some recesses as well. Mr. Lockwood is their coach. They were supposed to travel to Chief Poundmaker School Thursday for a game, but it had to be cancelled due to water problems at Chief Poundmaker School. The junior team played a game in Spiritwood Monday.

Curling has started under the supervision of Kari Gray. We have three senior teams this year, with some junior players on those teams. They practise Wednesday nights in Radisson and will attend the playoffs Feb. 4 and 5. I think they are really inspired after watching the Canadian Olympic trials.

We have a drama club this year under the guidance of Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Cardin. They have begun work on a western play and the date for the drama night will be announced at a later date.

Last Friday, the Grade 9 practical and applied arts class, along with Mrs. Cardin, made Gougere and sold it to the staff and students at lunch. It is a cheesy French baked roll. It was very tasty. The Grade 7 and 8 class also made chicken skewers and rice that day. They will be making meatballs and rice Friday.

Brodie Gray, Grade 4, and his hockey team, the Battleford Barons, hosted a tournament at the Battleford Arena on the weekend. They played very well and won the gold medal. Brodie plays right wing on the team.

The Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 music class has been learning the Cup Song. They use a red plastic cup and follow a routine that goes with a song. It can move along very quickly, but it is fun trying. They are starting work on two songs and plan to compete in the Hafford music festival in March.

We have several competitive swimmers in our school. This weekend, Sean and Meghan Brehon and Cassidy and Katie Serhienko will be competing in a swim meet in North Battleford. They swim three times a week and attend several competitions throughout the year. Gook luck to them all.

A former student, Courtney Gray, left for a seven-week nursing practicum in Tanzania, Africa. This is part of her nursing course. She is in her fourth year and only has one more practicum to finish when she returns to Canada; then she will have completed her nursing degree. Enjoy your adventure, Courtney.

Many classes have started skating during their physical education classes. We are very fortunate to have the rink connected to the school. We can skate and return to class with no trouble. The school is very grateful to Glen Milman and the rink committee for looking after the ice.

Keep your eyes open for the Maymont School Snow Angels. They may be around your home shovelling snow off your steps or walks. They will leave a little angel on your doorknob. They do not want any money. It is a pleasure to help.

January is moving very quickly. Hopefully we will get some warm weather to enjoy.
