Herb Troesch was born May 20, 1914 in a log home on SE 6-49-20. The Troesch family continue to farm that same land today.

Herb was the second child and eldest son of Jake and Mary Ann Troesch of Edam and younger brother to Lena. Three sisters, Mina, Mary, Frances, and three brothers, Leo, Joseph, and Martin, followed in the next 16 years.

Herb relates his history with flare and colour. I found it very interesting reading his family story in the Edam history book, Their Hopes, Our Heritage.

When Anne Dub came to Edam to nurse, she caught Herb's eye and, on July 20, 1950, Anne, in Herb's words, "took on a contract with yours truly for better or worse!" Together they raised three sons and two daughters - Denis, Robert, Carol Anne, Gerry and Maureen.

There was a come and go tea held in Herb's honour the afternoon of May 18 at the Edam Community Centre followed by a supper. The supper was started off with a parade in honour of Herb, given by the great grandchildren, along with a couple of his favourite songs being sung by the guests. Herb requested the song, Happy Days are Here Again, as it was one of his old milking songs.

Those in attendance were: Herb's brother Joe from Ontario; Herb's children from Saskatoon, B.C., Quill Lake and Edam; Herb's granddaughter and family from B.C.; grandson from B.C.; eight other grandchildren from around Saskatchewan and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as his sister-in-law from Spiritwood, cousins, nieces and nephews from various places and lots of local friends and family. Congratulations, Herb and wishes for continued health and happiness.

A prince and princess tea was held at the Edam Community Center May 17 as a fundraiser for Miss Teenage West Central Saskatchewan title holder, Jensen White of the Edam/Vawn area. Jensen competed in Saskatoon in April and will be travelling to Toronto to participate in the pageant there. She will be holding another fundraiser June 7 to help with her expenses to the pageant. A garage sale will be her next venture, starting at 8 a.m. in the Vawn hall, and any donations are welcomed. For more information you can contact Jensen.

Congratulations to the April trip of the month winners: Layne and Ramone Becotte with Bryce and Andrea Thom winning the $100. Also to the winners of the May draw: Michael and Heather Levasseur, with Adrian and Laura LaClare winning the $100.

That is it for this week. I will have the track and field results for the high school and elementary for you as well as the details of the 4-H show. Talk to you next week.
