The Borden Friendship Club held their August potluck supper and birthdays Aug. 26, with more than 60 out to enjoy the meal and entertainment. Blowing out the candles on the cakes brought by Shirley Ikert of Langham, Laura Loeppky and Rose Mandziak were Abe Miller of Langham, Audrey Baker, Cheryl Larner, Don Dyck and Reuben Derksen.
The entertainers for the evening were the Langham RV Park musicians, who play guitar and winter in Yuma. Ariz. and Oosoyos, B.C. Shirley Rosenfeldt and John Peters sang four gospel tunes and Ken Stevenson sang three songs. Abe Miller sang Fraulein, Family Bible and Side by Side. Ken Hilsentager sang two songs. Randy Fehr sang I’m a Pilgrim and Five Foot Two, which he also did in metric. Randy Doering sang Goodnight Irene and, with John joining in the chorus, sang Life’s Railway to Heaven and Waltz Across Texas.
More than 30 dropped in at Idylwyld Court in Borden Aug. 29 to sign a card and bid farewell to Scherle Smith, who was moving to Colonsay Aug. 31 after living in Borden for eight years. Hostesses Ann Brand and Helen Sutherland served coffee, tea, punch and goodies to everyone who dropped in. They also presented Scherle with a bag of cash from the group.
Two of Borden’s 2015 grads travelled out of the province this past weekend to further their post-secondary schooling. Dallas Burnett is attending McGill University in Montreal, Que., studying atmospheric science relating to weather and climate. He will be living in residence there.
Duncan Sutherland drove to Cranbrook, B.C., to attend College of the Rockies and play volleyball for two years on the Avalanche men’s team, while taking classes in kinesiology. The players on the boys’ and the girls’ team will all be staying in residence. Their away games will be in Vancouver, New Westminster, Abbotsford, Victoria and Nanaimo and the other teams will travel to Cranbrook in return.
Dallas and Duncan are both attending on scholarships and we wish them all the best in their new ventures.
At the United Church Saskatchewan conference the end of May, outgoing president Gayle Wensley of Borden was presented with a quilted wall hanging handcrafted by Barb McNaughton. The hanging, titled Roots and Wings, has branches and birds depicting the seven presbytery districts in the province. Three leaves on each branch represent the pastoral charges in each presbytery. It has been on display at Speers and Borden churches from June until now.
